Yesterday, I stood in front of a judge with my husband, daughter and our lawyer.

We were called up early as it was an uncontested case...you see...she's 42 years old now.

I raised her since she was 5 years old. Never thought; or even heard of a woman having to adopt the child of a man she was married to.

Always thought adoptions were done by men who married women with children...for the last name, inheritances, etc.

My husband approached me just a week ago and told me that we need to do this...we've been married almost 37 years.

We were about the 5th case that the judge called forward in the Family Court.

Every one that we sat back and heard before we were called forward were divorce/ child custody/etc.

The judge smiled HUGELY as we all stepped up before him when we were called. I wish I could remember all his words. but he blessed us for loving, staying together and even seeking bonds after all these years.

Nicest judge. Our lawyer reminded us as we were all leaving the courthouse that we were the "sweet spot" for this judge. His day is full of relationships/marriages breaking up...you get it.

We all went out for a steak dinner right afterward. :)

I know..this is going way too long now. But...on our way to the Steakhouse, my daughter asked me WHY I never had adopted her earlier. I told her that I didn't think I had to as I was married to her father and we had total custody of her.

That's when they both informed me that if her father (my husband) died, her bio mother could have sued and gotten custody of her. OMFG!

I NEVER in my life imagined that scenario....

SO....any women who are in this situation; please take care and adopt the kids you love and think are safe with you.

Oh yeah...so I haven't yet offered up WHY I'm adopting her now, as she is an adult. That's another story that perhaps some day I may share with you all.

;)

:rose::rose::rose:
I'm crying! You are the best!
:heart::heart::heart:

Awww...darlin! no crying allowed! My message was for women to adopt the kids of the men they marry.

Especially if his ex is NOT fit to care for the child!

pollynova, yer a doll! :heart::rose:

It's just such a sweet thing, I can't help it! :heart:

Congratulations!

And yes you are correct spouses of people with children must take extra steps to ensure their interests and the interests of the family are protected legally.

Regardless of the legal aspect, this made for some nice reading this morning. :)

Congratulations and good for you-and your husband-for pursuing this and getting it done. Things that seem obvious, like you raising her since she was five, seem to have no bearing if things get litigious in the case of someone passing away. best to have it all buttoned up.

Thanks Adrina and lovecraft68!

We are a very close family and I love our daughter so very much. She's always been a good kid.

She married a Lt. Col. in 1999 and he retired about 5 years ago. They have a very smart and accomplished daughter.

ok, enough of my doting nonsense.

I love you all tooooooo! :kiss:

Colonel Hogan....I'd adopt you too in a heartbeat!

what the heck: I tried to send kisses and roses to you but got a message that I was over the limit.

Aaaah, must be the emojis in your original.

Ok...I'm not too proud to type.....Hugs and kisses and hearts, hugs and kisses and hearts.

Thanks Colonel Hogan. I adore you.

I think the limit is 10 of any emojis. Doesn't seem fair, does it? ;)

Thanks, sweetie, and congratulations to you and your family!!

At least make her clean out the cat box!

Hah! funny thing about cat boxes! We are all cat families. Years ago, I bought four LITTER ROBOT boxes.

These things are AMAZING!!! They are self-cleaning and you only have to pull the bag of waste once a week.

Within 7 minutes of the cat entering and doing her biz...it automatically sifts, cleans and dumps the stuff into a lower drawer.

There is a clean unit every time she goes in.

The Litter Robot people aren't paying me a dime for plugging for them....promise.

I gave my daughter one of them a couple years ago and she loves it.

Which model do you have?

Congratulations!

What a wonderful post! It's always wonderful to hear about loving families. I've been in social work for over two decades and the most important thing I've learned is to celebrate and appreciate the love within a caring family, no matter how it's formed. Thanks for starting my day with a smile 😊

Ok, but I have no idea what I said that offended you. I was being genuinely positive about adoption. Adoptive and blended families are just as awesome as blood relatives, sometimes better. Sorry that whatever I wrote upset you. That certainly wasn't my intention.

Don't listen to Lance. He's dead. :D

I have bought several of the bubble units as we have some stray cats we've taken in down at our office place....also gave one to our daughter for their 3 cats.

I have the newest open-air model sitting in our hallway still in the box that I recently purchased for our little fluffbutt here at home.

Matter of fact, that was on my list of things to do today is get it all put together and set up.

If you've never seen these things, they are amazing! I've had the older models (bubble units) for at least 8 years and never once had a problem with them.

We're getting this new open-air one put together today, as I mentioned, so our kitty is gonna think it's CHRISTMAS!!!

Yano, it's not often that one finds something so unusual and fantastic, but I swear by these things....Litter Robots!

I'll shup about it now. :eek:

Don't shup about it! I love getting first hand info on commercial goods. A happy customer brings other happy customers.

Thank you!
