The OP is a prelude to a recent thread about a German mayor saying a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico was evil, wrong-headed, and just plain pro-America.
I think it's dandy the mayor has this opinion, but I will point out his city doesn't share a border with Mexico.
And the comment the wall would be an embarrassment in terms of world opinion, so what? I suspect there are a lot of people out there who think it is absolutely insane to not have a secure border.

What makes you think we don't have a secure border? It's not easy to cross without permission, is it? A Korean-style border impossible to cross we don't need; no border-related problem even justifies the bad optics, let alone the expense.

Trump is clearly basing his plans for a wall on the north/south Korean wall.

It seems to me that it is the only one that has worked. So I guess it's going to be electrified, mined and overseen by machine gun towers and manned by several divisions of the army.

Even if the Mexicans pay for the construction it is going to cost you Yanks a fortune to keep it effective.
