What happens after prom?

Hi Guys,

Hope everyone is doing fine and well.

I had a question. What happens after prom? Do kids have their final written examinations? Do they have a break before they head to college?

I ask because I have an idea for a story (that will be based in a fictional city) that I want to write about and since I do not live in the US, I am not aware of these kind of things. If someone could help by providing some info that would be great.....

I thought usually it was a night of utter debauchery only teenagers could unleash, usually ending with a trashed floor of a hotel/motel, a dozen lost virginity's, and whose ever credit card was used had a pair of angry parents.

I lived through three prom's...and yeah they all ended pretty much the same way.

Edit -- Sorry, in the US & Canada prom happens after last examinations and graduation. Some students immediately leave to work for the summer, some take the summer off. Final exams are a big burden and prom is the last big party before you never see most of the people again.

Does that make sense?

well i know about the night of debauchery bit... just that this story will have followups after prom night.... so wanted to know if kids usually have finals that follow in the days to come or they go on break before heading to college...

I just found it a bit confusing because there were websites that said that some regions have prom after graduation while others before their finals. So maybe this differs state to state?

Prom is in mid to late April for Juniors and Seniors. Finals are in late May. Graduation in early June. For the vast majority, prom is a formal dance with formals for the
girls and Tux for the guys. For the majority there is minimal drinking, and either an after prom breakfast hosted by parents or take the date to a nice restaurant for a
nice meal after prom. Im most cases the kids have a curfew and have to be home by a certain time. Even for prom. lol. I suspect the virginity lost is highly exaggerated.
Either they have already been there or it is not going to happen that night. lol.

Not near me. Prom is typically in April, with students having anywhere from 2 weeks up to a month of school remaining. Some of that is spent taking finals and state mandated standardized tests.

My bad, is that a Southern/Mid-West tradition? I am Canadian, and our formal/prom was always after graduation, same for upstate NY & PA, and I'm pretty sure around Detroit Michigan.

Nope. Not here in Pa either. Held in April like Brooke said.

Back when I was in high school, our prom was in May with graduation in early June, often the first weekend in June. It does seem like we returned after prom for finals only. The kids take more tests now and mandated "end of year testing" is in late April, so that's driving everything sooner.

The high school my kids attended had prom before graduation, with no drinking contracts and the parents attending the prom.

I felt sorry for them and disgusted with the parents... Prom is for drinking and fucking on the beach till dawn.

I would add that the prom dress has evolved here in Ohio. Years ago they were generally "gowns" Long and maybe a bit of cleavage. Now a days a lot of girls are in SHORT dresses/skirts with ample cleavage. A truly CFM look. Hot enough to make parents cringe.

Down here, there are some schools that give the kids breathalyzer tests before they can enter.

This just postpones the kids drinking until after they leave prom.

Prom was a month ago, and school gets out next week, here. After prom, there is a hosted after hours party that the PTA puts together.

'Prom' was an American thing. Made it's way into Canada now. We used to call it a graduation or commencement dance. Held after graduation. I think it may still be held after graduation. What if you fail exams and don't graduate. Commencement dances used to a lot simpler way way back in ancient times. No limos, no horse drawn carriages and no skimpy dresses. Maybe a theme. Commercialization combined with life styles of the rich and famous TV thing.

Missed mine was in basic already by then.

I admire your interest in accuracy, but prom is always before both finals and graduation. Mothers Day weekend (this coming weekend) is about the latest you ever see it, and I think it's already taken place at most schools.

And of course, if you want to be completely comprehensive on the subject of "what happens after prom" here at Lit, you might want to specify that all of your characters have celebrated their 18th birthday.

I had turned 17 less than a month before my last day at school. Had grades good enough to earn exemptions from finals. Bet they don't do that any more! Only needed a 60% in a course to be exempted. Still went to school but took a Frisbee with me for something to do.

Due to agricultural work we were on terms not semesters. Took all year to earn a credit. Harvest work cuts into first term too much.
