Trump’s First 100 Days

http://billmoyers.com/story/first-one-hundred-days/

APRIL 28, 2017

The ship of state is rudderless. Dead ahead lie a plethora of rocks and shoals.

— Andrew J. Bacevich, author most recently of America’s War for the Greater Middle East: A Military History.

Only in community can our democracy succeed. Let us stay together for the long haul. We can emerge stronger for it…if we are faithful.

— Sister Simone Campbell of NETWORK Lobby for Catholic Social Justice and leader of Nuns on the Bus

One hundred days have shown that he views communities of color, including black communities, as “others” who have no place in his America. How else to explain why his administration wants to gut public education, civil rights laws and protections, affordable housing, police reforms and other systems, laws and institutions that support communities of color, low-income especially, to participate and succeed?

Remember: a threat to the most vulnerable among us is a threat to all.

Trump put an executive order into effect last week to, in his words, "stop crime and crimes of violence against law enforcement officers." But when the facts about police, violence and victims are considered — real facts, not alternative facts — the math doesn’t work. Like Winston Smith in George Orwell’s 1984, we are being asked to believe that two plus two does not equal four.

The department's motion cited President Donald Trump's executive order in February calling on the department "to prioritize crime reduction" and Attorney General Jeff Sessions' formation of a task force to ensure that the agency is using its resources to push that agenda.

Trump made many promises, to many people. Where a number of groups of people intersect, is law and law enforcement.

Trump certainly was not on the side of Occupy Wall Street protesters. His stab at them, was they did not wear "beautiful suits." Trump dismissed any legitimate concerns the protesters may have had.

"They don’t look unemployed. Some of them really don’t look unemployed. And their parents look like they really probably work on Wall Street.”

OTOH, in 2011, Trump had taken on another effort to enter politics. Trump cultivated the support of the NYPD.

Donald Trump gets stop-and-frisk facts totally wrong in debate

September 27, 2016

Trump said Holt was “wrong” in saying stop-and-frisk searches are unconstitutional.

Even an NYPD public information officer called out Trump, tweeting during the debate, "Critics decried that having fewer stops in #NYC would result in higher crime. The very opposite occurred." Trump also insisted in the debate that crime and murders have gone up since stop-and-frisk stopped.

A New York Civil Liberties Union analysis from 2015 punches more holes in Trump's claim that stop-and-frisk "worked very well in New York"—the NYPD's own statistics show that black and Latino New Yorkers are overwhelmingly targeted by the practice, and that close to nine out of ten stops between 2002 and 2015 were deemed innocent.

Bloomberg, told the New Yorker last fall that during both administrations, officers were encouraged to "make as many contacts as possible with people based on their race and ethnicity and where they live," adding, "it was about instilling fear in people."

Giuliani was a Trump toady, and it paid off handsomely. Giuliani was granted national media exposure.

5 Reasons That New York Post Editorial on Stop And Frisk Is Bullshit

Stop and Frisk Transforms into Stop, Frisk, Arrest, and Deport

Transformers: More than meets the eye. Are your local police officers functioning as ICE agents ? Are they legally permitted to question your citizenship, arrest you, confine you, and send you to a private prison, funded to hold potential deportees ? ICE agents have been ordered not to pose as local police.

One of those tools is a federal program that enlists state and local cops and jail officials to identify people they believe may be undocumented immigrants.

How could a local bill that had the support of every City Council member, the police commissioner and the House of Delegates die in committee? Who could stand in the way of passing a bill that would remedy such a widely agreed upon issue, and why would they do so?

In fact members of the department shared the bill's goals with the Department of Justice during consent decree negotiations. One could make the connection that this had something to do with Baltimore's consent decree not specifically listing a robust community policing committee as was the case for Ferguson.

Why does Sessions attempt to interfere with Baltimore, when the everyone in a position to assent, are in agreement ?

The stand represents the start of what appears to be a retreat by the Trump administration from the federal consent decrees that have been put in place in several US cities in recent years to root out racism, excessive force, and other abuses against minorities.

Nearly all residents who testified Thursday voiced strong support for the consent decree and urged the judge to sign it swiftly.

‘‘Nonwhite residents feel distrustful, attacked, bullied, defensive, scared, scarred and singled out,’’ said Shantay Guy, a community mediator. ‘‘Officers generally feel misunderstood, ill-equipped, labeled, targeted, mischaracterized, stereotyped, demoralized, criticized and limited.’’

(Baltimore police officers were heard, to be cheering news of the reforms?)

The decree itself was negotiated by the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division and the Baltimore Police Department in the closing days of the Obama administration.

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/04/baltimore-consent-decree/522393/

A consent decree allows the Justice Department to step in when one of the nation’s eighteen thousand law-enforcement departments goes seriously awry. The decrees were created as part of the 1994 crime bill to address situations in which a “pattern or practice” of the police violated citizens’ rights.

A few weeks ago, in a meeting with civil-rights advocates, Sessions complained that oversight penalized entire departments for the actions of a few officers, but that is not the case: the Justice Department found no systematic abuse in twenty-four of its investigations, and declined to pursue oversight.

Baltimore’s police commissioner, Kevin Davis, said that he was “disappointed” by Sessions’s action, adding that the city would benefit from a federal monitor who held its “feet to the fire” on reform.

Sessions’s position is even more tenuous with regard to Baltimore.

http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2017/04/24/will-jeff-sessions-police-the-police

Despite the opposition of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a federal judge in Baltimore on Friday locked in place a consent decree between the city's police force and the Department of Justice. While local officials cheered the order, which seeks to reform the troubled Baltimore Police Department after the Obama Justice Department found widespread unconstitutional and discriminatory practices, Sessions issued a blistering statement predicting that crime would rise as a result.

Under Sessions, the Department of Justice has begun to walk back its commitment to federal oversight of police departments with discriminatory patterns or practices, a priority of the Obama administration.

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2017/04/jeff-sessions-couldnt-stop-consent-decree-baltimore

Justice Department attorney John Gore told a judge Thursday that newly minted Attorney General Jeff Sessions is concerned about the agreement and "whether it will achieve the goals of public safety and law enforcement while at the same time protecting civil rights."

http://www.register-herald.com/regi...cle_f0094350-1393-57cb-b631-df11346b7550.html

"Those reforms are going to take place no matter what," said Police Commissioner Kevin Davis. "We have to continue to stress the necessity of constitutional policing in Baltimore."

The House of Representatives is designed to swing and popular sentiment — of the kind that actually motivates voting — is running hard against Trump’s Republicans. After exactly 100 days, the Trump regime starts to unravel.

— Simon Johnson, economist and editor of BaselineScenario.org

The nepotism, conflicts of interest and payola of his administration make Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos look like Trappist monks.

But there is a lesson to be gained. While Trump is undoubtedly an authoritarian, he is one who is also ignorant, lazy and possessed of a short attention span. He got where he is by bluff, bluster and empty threats, but when facing unaccustomed and resolute resistance, he folds because he’s never had to work hard before, or do complicated planning. Those flaws in his character leave an opening for a counter-strategy.

And for cautious hope.

100 days of Trump: delivering for the extreme religious right

For at least the third time since he became a candidate for president, Donald Trump was asked whether he seeks God’s forgiveness. The first two times he said no, but in an interview published Wednesday his answer was a bit vaguer.

I am not sure I have,” he said then. “I just go on and try to do a better job from there. I don’t think so. I think if I do something wrong, I think, I just try and make it right. I don’t bring God into that picture. I don’t.”

Glad we got that straightened out.

Still hoping for a Charlie Sheen appearance.

Did winning happen after the first 100 days ?

Aussie pols are "taking the piss"

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull openly mocking Emperor Caligula Carrot

“The Donald and I, we are winning and winning in the polls. We are winning so much. We are winning, we are winning like we have never won before. We are winning the polls. We are! We are. Not the fake polls. Not the fake polls! They’re the ones we’re not winning in. We’re winning in the real polls. You know, the online polls. They are so easy to win. I know that. Did you know that? I kind of know that. They are so easy to win. I have this Russian guy. Believe me it’s true, it is true.”

It's how the con artist is seen around the world. A laughing stock.

I'm no fan of Turnbull but it was funny.

Neil Gorsuch is on the Supreme Court. Yeah....this matters.
Illegal Border Crossings are down....like a lot.
The amount of new government regulations a fraction of what they were under the previous guy.
The U.S. pulled out of a joke of a Climate Agreement...no, it's not a treaty.
Mexico City policy reinstated.

Future??
Travel Ban will be upheld.
Obamacare will be replaced, not entirely repealed.
One..maybe two more supreme court seats will be filled.
Infrastructure and Taxes.
...all of these are likely, and Mueller can't stop them.

Trump will have a lasting, solid legacy whether or not he finishes four years.
I was astonished at the number of countries that since withdrew from the Paris Agreement, following the US example.

Zilch.

An actual President, that's who. :)

We have one now too. So far the one we have is working out better than the piece of shit who got two terms because he was half black. People voted for obama because of his race, globalist ideals, and left-wing liberalism. It's a good thing for the country he can't hold that office again!

The very much Christian Barack Obama.

You mis-spelled muslim.
I'm not one to judge a person on the 'level' of their faith, so I won't claim truth or BS on their claims of being Christian. That being said, actions beats words. obama did his damnedest to show his muslim preference.

I was astonished at the number of countries that since withdrew from the Paris Agreement, following the US example.

Zilch.

The other nations didn't have the same level of BS that the obama had acted alone to agree on. It was a bad deal for the US, so Trump told them to fuck off. It was a good call. Every country had their own list of rules, with almost no penalty of failure to meet goals.

Bullshit. You don't understand what the Paris Agreement is.
