"The University of Missouri is unlikely to see a rebound in freshman enrollment in the fall, which means tuition revenue will not be the source of money to cover the latest round of state budget cuts.

A decline of more than 20 percent in this year’s incoming class forced layoffs, a hiring freeze and a 5 percent cut in general fund budgets across the Columbia campus. Overall enrollment, down 6 percent from the 2015-16 academic year, already was expected to decline further as the smaller freshman class moves toward graduation.

Gov. Eric Greitens on Monday ordered $146.4 million in new withholdings from state spending, including almost $20 million earmarked for MU. Provost Garnett Stokes and MU Faculty Council Chairman Ben Trachtenberg discussed how to deal with the new cuts during a Thursday council meeting."

In 1967 tuition at the local college was $5 a credit hour, $90 for a full load.

Inflation is around 10 times what things cost back then. Gas was a quarter in 1967, $2.50 now. Rent was $85 a month then, around $850-$900 now. Minimum wage was about $1.25 then, 7-something now tho many places pay $10 to start.

But tuition at the same college is now $300 a credit hour, and many majors are useless.

I advised my black grandkids to go for the gusto not the affirmative action scams. The oldest graduates with an engineering degree in a week or two, and headed to the army as an officer in airborne (his hobby is sky diving). The other is a pharmacy major.

Pell grants and virtually unlimited student loans that are never going to be repaid allowed that inflation.

I agree with the proposal. Every single African American student who can show that they were released from racial slavery in the Confederacy should be entitled to a free university education. Every Hispanic student who is descended from an Aztec, Mayan or native ancestry, should also receive free tuition. Native americans too. Probably the Irish and Italians should get something, maybe a discount on shoes for life, as they had a hard time in the 1890s, but have white skin and do not deserve as much as someone of a darker hue. Chinese suffered and need free something as well. Japanese who had family interred during the second war deserve free tuition for reparation.

That leaves me. I come from English stock, steeped in privilege since the 1500s. I guess I will just write a bigger cheque every April.

Both parties are using them to further their agenda.

I haven't seen this exhibitionism on the part of black GB posters. Only on the part of white posters.

Look at the VA if you want to see what single payer looks like in America. Bernie is a blithering idiot. He's spent a lifetime admiring and sympathizing with Communism and that's all he'll bring to the table, more failing policies of centralized government planning. His followers are naive, ignorant, pawns unfamiliar with his history.

As someone who's had both private insurance and (currently) the VA - the VA is an order of magnitude better.

Your silence about the free college issue leads me to believe you agree with Bernie.

Why are you so critical about the care received at VA hospitals? I think you might find this article from Forbes interesting.

The hue and cry about the quality of care in the nation’s largest integrated health care system - the Veterans Health Administration in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) - should be balanced by some general facts about performance. Given our national commitment and personal debts to our Veterans, it is certainly fair for the VA healthcare system to be held to a high standard. The areas identified for improvement deserve attention, but you should know 3 things before rushing to judgment about the performance of the entire system.

First, lost in the current rancor about the VA is the recognition that the VA healthcare system has consistently out-performed the non-VA/private sector in quality of care and patient safety.

Second, the VA healthcare system has been a model for accountability. The issue of wait times exists because the VA decided to measure it. The VA has been an early adopter of electronic records and accountability measurement. It is not proper to evaluate the VA in isolation.

And for those decrying the wait times that are the result of the lack of doctor appointments, will more resources be available to the VA to make more appointments available? And would that even improve health? The VA is experiencing a huge influx in Veterans and only a modest increase in staff.
