As a diversion, apparently. The New Yorker reports:

Recently, several members and staffers on the House Intelligence Committee, which is investigating Russia’s role in the Presidential election, visited the National Security Agency, in Fort Meade, Maryland. Inside the enormous black glass headquarters of America’s largest spy agency, the congressmen and their aides were shown a binder of two to three dozen pages of highly classified intercepts, mostly transcripts of conversations between foreign government officials that took place during the Presidential transition. These intercepts were not related to the heart of the committee’s Russia investigation. In fact, only one of the documents had anything to do with Russia, according to an official who reviewed them.

What the intercepts all had in common is that the people being spied on made references to Donald Trump or to Trump officials. That wasn’t even clear, though, from reading the transcripts. The names of any Americans were concealed, or “masked,” the intelligence community’s term for redacting references to Americans who are not the legal targets of surveillance when such intelligence reports are distributed to policy makers.

The binder of secret documents is at the center of the bizarre scandal created by what may be the most reckless lie President Trump has ever told. On March 4th, he tweeted, “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!” The White House made several efforts to justify Trump’s claim, including using Devin Nunes, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, as a conduit for the documents, which allegedly offered some substantiation. A former Nunes staffer now working for the White House dug up the transcripts and shared them with Nunes. As Bloomberg View reported, earlier this month, Susan Rice, Obama’s national-security adviser, had used a process that allowed her to request that the masked names be revealed to her. Rice had to log her unmasking requests on a White House computer, which is how Trump’s aides knew about them. Nunes and the White House presented this as a major scandal. “I think the Susan Rice thing is a massive story,” Trump told the Times, adding, while offering no evidence, that Rice may have committed a crime.

It is now clear that the scandal was not Rice’s normal review of the intelligence reports but the coördinated effort between the Trump Administration and Nunes to sift through classified information and computer logs that recorded Rice’s unmasking requests, and then leak a highly misleading characterization of those documents, all in an apparent effort to turn Rice, a longtime target of Republicans, into the face of alleged spying against Trump. It was a series of lies to manufacture a fake scandal. Last week, CNN was the first to report that both Democrats and Republicans who reviewed the Nunes material at the N.S.A. said that the documents provided “no evidence that Obama Administration officials did anything unusual or illegal.”

I spoke to two intelligence sources, one who read the entire binder of intercepts and one who was briefed on their contents. “There’s absolutely nothing there,” one source said. The Trump names remain masked in the documents, and Rice would not have been able to know in all cases that she was asking the N.S.A. to unmask the names of Trump officials.

Nunes is being investigated by the House Ethics Committee because, in talking about the documents, he may have leaked classified information. But this is like getting Al Capone for tax evasion. The bigger scandal is the coördinated effort to use the American intelligence services to manufacture an excuse for Trump’s original tweet.

Judge Napolitano predicts Trey Gowdy will ‘Trap’ Susan Rice nto incriminating hersel

Fox News contributor Judge Andrew Napolitano predicted Tuesday that if former national security adviser Susan Rice is called to testify in front of the House Intelligence Committee over her unmasking of key figures in President Donald Trump’s campaign team, chairman Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C, would likely “trap” her into misleading Congress,

“Simply stated, her credibility is shot before she even takes the oath and says a word,” Napolitano said, adding Rice has proven herself to be a “public liar.”

The judge believes Rice has built such a complex mountain of lies it would be easy to trick her into slipping and saying something that doesn’t fit with the narratives she has concocted.

She's going to lawyer up, plead the Fifth and refuse any immunity deals.

She's been the fall girl for so long now that she's gotten good at it.

Hearings will be a colossal waste of time and energy.

The only thing here to glean is just how crazy Abu Ivanka al-Amriki makes people on the Left...

Joe DiGenova says there may already be one or more impaneled grand juries looking into the affair.

How Dare they get make her get on TV and lie again and again and again and again and again.....................!!!!!!

Oh the poor SJW outrage!!!!

I wonder if Rand Paul has been able to get the Susan Rice knot out of his knickers yet. Dude went ballistic...over a non-event. But the entire issue certainly helped with Nunes' credibility. Still waiting for that "wire tapping" evidence, Donnie.

Nothing in connection with any of this has helped Nunes' credibility.

Charles Krauthammer unravels Susan Rice’s ‘outright lie and contradiction’

Conservative commentator Charles Krauthammer unraveled what he called an “outright lie and contradiction” from Susan Rice, Obama’s former national security adviser who is at the center of the wiretapping controversy. He made the comments to Dana Perino Tuesday on Fox News.

“Last week, we had the news that Michael Flynn would be offering to testify in exchange for immunity, that got wall-to-wall media coverage,” Perino said. “This is actually a very significant development, sort of, downplayed in some quarters. What did you make of it?”

“Well, you’re right about the downplaying,” Krauthammer responded. “The networks have essentially ignored it. I think in The New York Times, it appeared on page A-16, and the reason is they’re not interested, the mainstream media, and the Democrats, that’s sort of redundant, are not interested in this line of inquiry. They only want to talk about the collusion story, which is a legitimate story, or allegation, although there’s been no evidence to date. They are not interested in this story about the improper use of intelligence, which is equally important and it’s worth investigating.”

“I think the problem for Rice is, number one, that she appears to be totally contradicting herself,” Krauthammer explained. “When she said a couple of weeks ago, ‘I know nothing about this.’ It appears to be an outright lie and contradiction.”

The real reason the media still believe Susan Rice's lies

There is one undeniable truth within the D.C. press corps. If an ally of the Left says something, it is believed until proven false; deference which is decidedly not given to conservatives or even more liberal members of the GOP. The latest case in point is Susan Rice, the former Obama national security adviser and ambassador to the United Nations. Rice, a habitual liar, is believed time and time again by the media, so much so that it is embarrassing. Especially in light of her whopper regarding Syrian chemical weapons.

When Bloomberg’s Eli Lake dropped the bombshell that it was Susan Rice who had the names of Trump associates unmasked in foreign communications intercepts, the media fell in line to protect Rice and former President Barack Obama. CNN led the charge, using another former Obama administration political appointee, Jim Sciutto — who is now a CNN employee — to forcefully downplay the allegations. CNN’s Don Lemon told his audience that he wouldn’t “aid and abet” those trying to blame Rice.

Of course, Lemon and the rest of the MSM have no problem with aiding and abetting Rice, or any other leftist if it pushes their agenda.

Susan Rice is still lying

Eli Lake at Bloomberg News reported on April 3 that President Trump's lawyers discovered it was former President Obama's national security adviser Susan Rice who allegedly "requested the identities of U.S. persons in raw intelligence reports on dozens of occasions that connect to the Donald Trump transition and campaign."

Susan Rice at the center of another scandal? Yes, and she's lying about it on TV again. On "PBS NewsHour" on March 22, anchor Judy Woodruff introduced the interview by telling viewers she asked Rice about whether Trump and his transition officials "may have been swept up in surveillance of foreigners at the end of the Obama administration."

Rice protested: "I know nothing about this. I was surprised to see reports from Chairman Nunes on that count today." The Obama appointees were supposed to be smart, and yet they always say they didn't know anything.

The PBS interview came about because the Washington Post allowed Rice to make a transparently hypocritical argument about truth twisting on its op-ed page that day. A preposterous promotional email headline read: "Susan Rice: When the White House twists the truth, we are all less safe. The actions of America's allies -- and enemies -- depend on our perceived credibility."

Without the modern equivalent of wiretapping how are there intercepts that need to be unmasked?

Last October, Harry Reid, the ruthlessly partisan former senator from Nevada, wrote a nasty and bumptious letter to FBI director James Comey. The letter remains a significant piece of evidence in Obamagate, as it confirms his role as conduit for Obama administration’s political espionage against Trump.

“In my communications with you and other top officials in the national security community, it has become clear that you possess explosive information about close ties and coordination between Donald Trump, his top advisors, and the Russian government,” he wrote. “The public has a right to know this information. I wrote to you months ago calling for this information to be released to the public. There is no danger to American interests from releasing it. And yet, you continue to resist calls to inform the public of this critical information.”

Who were those “top officials” whispering the fable of Trump-Russia collusion in Reid’s ear? One was John Brennan, Obama’s CIA director. Last August, Brennan shared his political espionage with Reid, knowing that Reid would then disseminate it to his friends in the liberal media.

Well, there's that whole FISA warrant thing. There's the domestic surveillance of foreign agents thing. There's the foreign surveillance of foreign agents thing. There's the being observed communicating with a foreign agent thing. There's the being mentioned in communications of a foreign agent thing. Shall I go on? None of which support Donnie's repeated allegations that "Obama had my 'wires tapped' in Trump Tower'. Or "How low has President Obama gone to tapp(sic) my phones...?" Or "President Obama was tapping my phones". (Emphasis added)

As with everything Donnie, it was all about Donnie. He claimed to have personally been surveilled. He has yet to produce any evidence that he had before he made the allegations or that he has dug up since, even with all of the power of the presidency at his finger tips, to support his now obviously ridiculous statements.
