After being summarily exorcised from the Trump campaign for his connections to Russia (wouldn't want to be too obvious), Paul Manafort has been negotiating with the Justice Department to find a way to register as an agent of Russia and not face jail time. In his spokesman's statement today, pains were taken to make sure there was no possibility anyone would think this settlement was in any way related to Manafort being on a bribe list found after former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych fled the country after he ordered his Berkut security forces to murder protestors. Yanukovych was a well-known Russian puppet who Manafort tried to keep in good graces through such actions.

"Since before the 2016 election, Mr. Manafort has been in discussions with federal authorities about the advisability of registering under FARA for some of his past political work. Mr. Manafort received formal guidance recently from the authorities and he is taking appropriate steps in response to the guidance. The work in question was widely known, concluded before Mr. Manafort began working with the Trump campaign and was not conducted on behalf of the Russian government."

Despite this settlement, Manafort is still under investigation for his role in the con artist's campaign of collusion with Russia during the 2016 election as well as possible money laundering for Yanukovych who fled with millions of dollars stolen from the Ukrainian people.

UPDATE

Manafort's name has now been confirmed to be on a list of bribes found in a ledger by Ukrainian authorities. The ledger came to light in August when Ukrainian authorities were investigating corruption and bribery in the administration of the Russian puppet Viktor Yanukovych who fled the country after he ordered protestors be murdered.

Previously, Manafort and [his spokesperson] Maloni have maintained the ledger was fabricated and said no public evidence existed that Manafort or others received payments recorded in it.

Through Maloni, Manafort now claims that any work he did for Russia, er, Ukraine, was completely open and he had no idea how he was paid this money which he said never existed in the first place.

The AP, however, identified in the records two payments received by Manafort that aligned with the ledger: one for $750,000 that a Ukrainian lawmaker said last month was part of a money-laundering effort that should be investigated by U.S. authorities. The other was $455,249 and also matched a ledger entry.

The newly obtained records also expand the global scope of Manafort's financial activities related to his Ukrainian political consulting, because both payments came from companies once registered in the Central American country of Belize. Last month, the AP reported that the U.S. government has examined Manafort's financial transactions in the Mediterranean country of Cyprus as part of its probe.

Federal prosecutors have been looking into Manafort's work for years as part of an effort to recover Ukrainian assets stolen after the 2014 ouster of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who fled to Russia. No charges have been filed as part of the investigation.

According to the articles, he is considering registering as an agent of Ukraine, which is fighting an undeclared war against Russia.

It typically went right over your head, Box, that the article repeatedly noted that he wanted to register for the period of representation of Ukraine between 2012 and 2014, when the government there was pro-Russian.

"Manafort is expected to register with the Justice Department as a foreign agent representing Ukraine's interests between 2012 and 2014, the sources said."

I realize that this is a bit too complex for you to understand.

This was before Trump was a candidate and while Obama was POTUS.
