Mayor Rahm Emanuel wants Chicago public high school students to show they have a plan for what's next before they can get a diploma.

Emanuel's proposal would add one more big item to the graduation checklist for high school seniors: proof they've been accepted into college or the military, or a trade or a "gap-year" program. The requirement would also be satisfied if the student has a job or a job offer.

The point, the mayor said, is to get Chicago Public Schools students in all parts of the city to stop seeing high school graduation as an ending and get them to consider what's next.

"Just like you do with your children, college, post-high school, that is what's expected," Emanuel said at a Wednesday morning news conference. "If you change expectations, it's not hard for kids to adapt.

Does it trouble you that thousands of innocent people are shot every year in Chicago? Rahm is nothing more than another liberal big city mayor whose city is circling the drain after years of incompetent governance.

Isn't there a 'catch 22' in there? The service won't take you without a diploma or GED but you can't get a diploma unless they take you. The same with many univ. You have to have a diploma and transcript before you can be accepted. Are they going to issue 'provisional' diplomas?

I was just talking Catch-22 with Wat yesterday, he's never read it. Who knows, maybe to support Rahm, the Illinois University system may announce that no potential applicant will be refused pre-admission.

A better scenario would be if the City of Chicago guaranteed any failing or misbehaving student a full college scholarship while colleges and universities refused to admit students who consistently failed and misbehaved. :D

It bothers me that Rahm has anything to do with a solution to anything. Democrats aren't wired for social or economic solutions. Everywhere they rule there's social chaos and economic failure.

There's an assumption that Rahm can do anything...........he can't. The State sets the bar, not the city. And it's the school board that runs the show locally, not the mayor. So what we have here is a trial balloon floated by an individual that hasn't the power to do anything about the situation.

The public schools, especially in the large urban centers, have been going to shit for decades now. More and more class time spent on "self-esteem" programs of highly dubious value at the expense of core studies. "Social promotion" so the poor little dears won't feel bad about themselves. Charter schools aren't the answer either. They're saddled with teaching the same shit.

Vouchers may be one step in the right direction but that's never going to fly in large districts where the politicians are slaves to the union.
