As short a story as I can make it.

A Mexican woman, whose mother was twice deported from the U.S., wanted to do things the right way. She got a green card and employment in the U.S. by working for the state employment office. She never ran afoul of the law and is supporting four kids after her divorce, sometimes working three jobs because apparently the kids father is too lazy to support them.

In 2012 and 2014 she voted. She is now facing up to 8 years in prison and deportation for doing so.

The Republican Attorney General had this say about the charges, "shows how serious Texas is about keeping its elections secure.”

Meanwhile, in 2013, a 16-year old, Ethan Couch, who was stone dead drunk while driving, three times the legal limit, kills four people and injures two. He receives probation because he suffered from “affluenza” — a term that dates at least to the 1980s to describe the psychological problems that can afflict children of privilege. In other words, because he was white and his parents were rich, he should be excused from his acts because he didn't know any better.

Both acts took place in the same county of Texas.

For the record, Ethan got in trouble again when, 2 years later, a video showed him at a party where drugs and alcohol were being used. As part of his probation, he couldn't be anywhere near any of that.

His mother then promptly tried to hide him but fortunately he was tracked down and sent to jail.

In short, Texas cares more about people illegally voting than they do about people murdering others.

If the rich kid had gotten a stiff sentence, would that make you feel better about the Mexican lady?

For the record, I'm not defending her. She broke the law, even though it appears to be unintentional, and should pay the price. She at least was trying to do the right thing by getting her green card, working to support her kids and telling them this is how you should live. Within the law.

I am only pointing out, as the title of the thread indicates, the hypocrisy of Texas. Murder someone and get away so you can screw up again. Vote illegally and the world comes to an end.

Breaking news everyone - the law is not equal for the rich and poor!:cattail:

Anatole France said in 1894, "In its majestic equality, the law forbids rich and poor alike to sleep under bridges, beg in the streets, and steal loaves of bread."

I was disgusted when heard about this kid. Even now, he's not getting much more than a slap on the wrist. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/affluenza-teen-ethan-couch-sentenced-to-nearly-two-years-in-jail/
