Harsh sentence for racist Georgia couple has white supremacists across the country freaking out: report

White supremacists are outraged after a couple was sentenced to 20 years in prison for displaying a Confederate flag and making “terroristic threats” to black people who were attending a child’s birthday party in Georgia in 2015.

The defendants, Jose Torres and Kayla Norton, who were convicted last month, also “pulled out a shotgun and threatened to kill people at [the] party, including children,” according to Douglas County District Attorney Brian Fortner.

White supremacist groups have responded to the sentencing online in Facebook posts and petitions in protest of the conviction, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) reports. James Oliver, a member of the country’s largest neo-Nazi organization, the National Socialist Movement (NSM), made a video over the weekend about the sentencing, though it appears to have been removed. The NSM is rooted in the original American Nazi Party.

Without defending anybody, I don't believe much of anything said by Raw Story. I also find it hard to believe anybody would even be arrested for flying the Confederate flag, which should be a First Amendment right. If they were actually shooting at people, especially children, that would be another matter but, even then, the sentence seems extreme. I would like to see more evidence of just what happened.

Under a previous administration, they wouldn't actually serve anything close to twenty years. The irony is that we're under a Trump administration, so they might wind up serving twenty-five years.

It's not that high if they threatened to kill children. I mean, this depends on how it all played out. If this was a terror act, mixed with racism bixed with hostages and stuff - it all piles up.

The sentence is basically a representation of the threat to society, which those two seem to be a big one.
