Justice League: The New Wave (OOC - Interest Check)

A New Challenger Approaches!!

Home Earth- Earth-19- Gaslight Earth

Alter Ego - What is your character's "everyday" name? Lord Bernard "Buddy" Jonathon Clayton

Alias - What is their "super" name? The Animal-Man

Age - How old are is your character? Approximately 30 Years Old.

Appearance - http://www.newyorker.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/Brody-Tarzan-Reboot-1200.jpg

Personality - While most assume that Buddy is a savage, this could not be further from the truth. Buddy was only a baby when his parents died at the hands of Solovar, however, after being taken in by the Mangani he would eventually find the treehouse his father had built. There he would find some of the books that his parents brought with him. While it would not be until years later that he learned to speak in human tongues, Buddy was able to teach himself to read both in his father's English, as well as his mother's native French. Buddy would, as he grew older, read every scrap of paper he could find in the small traveling library his father had brought to the jungle with him.

As such, Buddy is much more eloquent than many would assume. He has also become a polyglot, learning not only French and English but also learning a variety of other languages. Buddy however prefers to let others think of him what they want. The better to underestimate him.

Like the apes of the Mangani tribe that he grew up with, Buddy can have a temper. Years of striking first and questioning later have instilled tremendous fight or flight instincts, usually leaning toward the former. However, since returning to European society, Buddy has worked hard to temper these responses.

Recently Buddy has relapsed somewhat into his old ways after the death of his children and wife. He now feels he has no reason to tolerate the stifling entrapment of European society, and has returned to the Jungle.

Gear (optional) - Buddy rarely carries more than the few clothes on his back. The only exception to this are a few trinkets that he keeps in the pockets of the jacket his wife gave him for their anniversary just before she died. However, being a skilled bushcraftsman there is little Buddy cannot make from the wilds around him.

Power/ability - Like the Mangani Apes, Buddy has been altered by the alien artifacts housed at the center of the Gorilla City. A damage ship had long ago crashed in this remote jungle, grant increased intellect, telepathy and other strange powers to the Mangani due to their long contact with the strange radiation of the ships power core. This same radiation has increased Buddy's intellect, given him the ability to quickly learn any language he is exposed to, including the ability to talk to animals. It also granted him a deep connection to The Red, the multiversal force of all living creatures.

Buddy has the ability to sense and communicate with any animal. He can also mimic their capabilities. Due to his connection to The Red, this extends to any creature that is, or ever was, part of the Red. However, Buddy has not honed this to the extent of it's potential. Typically Buddy calls on the animals he is most familiar with, or those that he can sense nearby.

Weakness - Other than his unique upbringing and his connection to The Red, Buddy is a normal man. He also can find it easy to regress to the angry, hostile man he was before he rediscovered his human side.

Bio -

Bernard Jonathon Clayton was born to Lord and Lady Clayton. Lord Jon Clayton was a renowned explorer and hunter, and his wife Genevieve Clayton was the only daughter of an aristocratic French noble. Genevieve and Jon both had deep love for the wilds, travel, and discovery. Genevieve was trained as a biologist. Genevieve would insist after Buddy's birth that her and Buddy continue to accompany Jon on his travels.

During one such adventure, Jon and Genevieve planned to spend several months in the deepest jungles of Africa. Preparing to raise young Buddy in the wilds, Genevieve brought with her many books, teaching aids and the like. However, not long after arriving in the area they had come to study the built a large communal home in the canopy for themselves and the guides that had accompanied them into the jungle.

However over the next several weeks things started to go very wrong. Members of the party started to go missing, supplies were sabotaged. Culminating in an assault by the leader of the Mangani, Solovar and his minions. The great apes assaulted the settlement, slaughtering many of the remaining men. Genevieve Clayton would sacrifice her life to protect young Buddy.

After her death, Jon made a final stand, but was unable to fend off Solovar and his ape warriors. However it would be the wife of Solovar, Boka, who would intervene and save Buddy. Still just an infant, Boka convinced her mate that the child was faultless, and deserved the chance to live. Solovar would allow his mate this concession begrudgingly, though he would never truly accept Buddy, whom the Mangani called Ba-Kar (gift to Boka).

Years later, Buddy would come become one of the Mangani warriors, violently protecting the primitive city they called home. Buddy was part of a brood of apes with Boka's other children, Nmandi and Grodd. Grodd, like his father, had abilities far beyond the rest of the Mangani. He was also, like his father cruel and vicious. Grodd would convince Buddy to make a preemptive strike on the nearest human settlement, Waziri. This was accomplished by Grodd using one of their bows to fatally kill Boka.

In a rage Buddy descended, against Gorilla Law, into the village. He attacked viciously and without regard for his own safety. In his rage, Buddy underestimated the humans. He was captured. However, before he could be put to death for his crimes, an American explorer staying in the village would intervene.

Archimedes Porter and his Daughter Ellen were in the jungle looking to rediscover a lost civilization, which, unbeknownst to them, was actually "Gorilla City". Archimedes and Ellen would eventually learn of the city and the other apes. With their help, Buddy would broker a piece between the Mangani and the Waziri, whom Grodd had tried to frame. Once his crimes were exposed, Grodd was sentenced to death. However, still loyal to his brother, Buddy pleaded with Solovar to instead exile him. And so Grodd was kicked out of Gorilla City.

Buddy and Ellen would spend several years living in the jungle. Though eventually, when Archimedes discovered who Buddy was, he convinced him to return to European society, to claim his title and use it to make a difference to the people.

Buddy and Ellen would have two children, Maxine and Korak. These were the happiest years Buddy had ever known. However, eventually, his happiness would be shattered. Grodd, having taken over another tribe of humans with his mind control, would bide his time until Buddy and his family were back visiting their jungle families. He launched a brutal attack on the Waziri, aided by not only the human Opar tribe, but also by several gorilla warriors that had sworn loyalty to Grodd over Solovar. In the ensuing battle, the Mangani would defeat the Opar, but Solovar would die attempting to protect Maxine and Korak from Grodd.

After the battle, Grodd, in a last desperate attempt, took control of Korak's mind, using a combination of his own formidable mind control and an equation given to him by The Dark One. Korak fell victim to the darkness that Grodd forced into his mind, Grodd's influence causing him to shoot and kill both Ellen and Maxine, before killing himself. Buddy was unable to stop him and blames himself for their deaths. Since that time, Buddy has retreated more and more into the jungle. Taking solace in the loneliness and familiar routines of hunting and survival.

I dig it!

What do you think, Var?

I would advise dropping intelligence to the 70-80 range and increasing the strength and durability to the thirties. I understand his connection to the "red", but wouldn't that also carry over to a more longterm enhancement of the physicals? and with a 70+ Int he's still way above average human.

Alias - What is their "super" name?

The Animal-Man (what about Manimal?) he's man that takes aspects of animals, not an animal that looks like a man.

just suggestions.

I agree with the number tweaks on the physical strength and durability. He'd actually be above peak human. But the reason I suggested his intelligence was so high was because it was boosted by the same stuff that made the Gorilla City gorillas super smart. That was the explanation Lunar and I came up with for Buddy's powers in this incarnation-- and the fact that he could teach himself multiple whole languages from books. In the comics, Buddy is also supposed to know *everything* about animals, the ultimate zoologist and Doctor Dolittle, so he ain't dumb. I dunno, maybe 70-80 would do that? I do kind of see your point.

But "Animal Man" is Buddy's codename from the comics, I only suggested he add the hyphen to make it seem more Victorian. I never could get into that "Manimal" show.

never saw this comic. so I have no reference for him. I'll go with whatever you decide since you have prior knowledge of the character concept.

Oh, man, Animal Man is one of my favorites.

He was one of the first characters I wrote on Lit, let me see if I can find him.

...here he is in action. Oh, man, that was a fun thread while it lasted.

Ironically, I think that was the only thread I was in with MilkManDan before this one and his untimely disappearance.

Manimal huh? I remember that show.

Awesome post Chas in challengers. I got some ideas about how to get Blue his first death. Hopefully I can post this evening

Looking to the future...

So.

Who the Hell knows, with these things, what could come up?

I could bluescreen or run dry or wear out or what have you. Any number of IRL things could scupper this thing.

It always seems like hubris to plan too far ahead only to have it spark out on you.

But. I really am having fun with this, and I hope you guys are, too.

I have three or four more Events planned in this primary story arc, and after that the story will essentially be "finished."

Between the current Event and the next one, there will be one more downtime, and if things progress according to the current plan, it will then just be back-to-back Events, one thing slamming up into the other, until the big climactic fight to the finish.

So if you guys have any more downtime character notes that you want to hit, let me know so we can plan ahead, make sure to hit those notes in the last downtime, just to make sure everyone gets to develop their characters to their fullest satisfaction, round out their arcs.

My current idea is to let people just play around in this Multiverse once the main storyline is done, and of course if any of the spin-off threads want to keep going at that point, I'm open to that too-- I want this world to live on as long as possible. Depending on how things go and how people feel, I may do another Big Meta Arc after this one, but we'll just see yet.

God bless and good luck and much love, everyone.

As usual, if there's anything you need, drop a line and ask.

I know what you mean about not wanting to plan to far ahead. but sometimes its so hard. :)

I just want to be able to say we told a good story while we had the chance, complete with foreshadowed payoffs. But the risk is, like a show getting cancelled prematurely, foreshadowing things that never get to pay off! :/

and some hero's are dragged kicking and screaming into the job. like it or not.

LOL no, so I am trying to play him that way.

I am just wondering if they ever did explain how earths hellfire effects alien beings.

I get the penance stare, that just shows past misdeeds so should work on anyone. Well except for true psychotics.

On a side note...I have not read Ghost for awhile but was wondering if there had been anymore mention of a guy called Suicide or Suicida in them?

In one animated version The Ghost Rider's Penance Stare took down Galactus, but I consider that example highly apocryphal.
