Looks Like Diaper Sales Will Be Going Up In D.C.

Why is he diverting the money towards military spending instead of health, or especially education?

More grants for poor students for the more prestigious universities, for example

The military is depleted and needs to be upgraded. Number one priority of government.

No need to spend more federal money on education, the kids are getting dumber. Time to give it all back to the states.

We already spend as much on defense as the next 11 biggest-spending countries combined. It's overkill. We don't need to spend nearly that much.

In the midst of an open-ended Global War on Terror where success depends on building international coalitions, who needs wasteful things like diplomacy?

That's not it. We don't need wasteful spending in the State Department.

Irrelevant. You have no idea how much we have to spend. The added 54 billion will be left up to the generals on where it get's spent. Major difference.

1.Ok, that makes more sense to me now.
*btw I wasn't trying to troll your thread. I was genuinely surprised and a bit worried by such a move".

2.American tertiary education puzzles me.
They are still among the best if not the best in the world when it comes to science, which means that both their Colleges/Universities offer high quality teaching, and that their selection process is rigurous.
But it seems to be biased and to favour kids who have rich parents. See the exorbitant fees charged by prestigious colleges like Yale and so on.

There's no need to spend wasteful money promoting the Obama left wing education agenda. We have Republicans are in office now, so Commie indoctrination will be going by the wayside.:D

At present we're armed for a conventional two-front war we'll never fight. We don't need to be. We don't need a global network of military bases. We don't need global military hegemony. We don't need to be an empire. We only need to be safe, and we can be safe at a much lower cost.

Social programs, the environment, foreign aid who needs them when you have a bloated entitled military/industrial complex?

Social programs, foreign aid and saving the environment do not generate profit for corporations or extra tax income for the Gov.

Money is everything! Money rules!

What about the money NATO will pay the US for their defense? Are we giving them a pass until they get around to it?

We probably wouldn't need a standing army if in our history an imperialistic neighbour had not invaded a couple of times or allowed terrorist to launch attacks from beyond our borders.

Can we send the US a bill for our armed forces? Make you a deal, take out the navy. Won't cost much. A drop in the bucket in comparison.

For the less informed in these matters (like myself) who are reading this debate, KingOrfeo's (as in a lib.) posts make more sense than your emotional ones.

A country's foremost duty lies towards it's own citizens (as in keeping them safe via military and social programs like health or education).

Only once these basic needs are tended to, should they consider whether they want to be altruistic towards other countries.

The US has indeed such a history, but it's all done. No reason to look back.

I would be similarly outraged if the increased military spending proposed by Trump would be used towards such end, instead of for safety reasons. what Rightguide said. Time will tell.

So which one is right?

More than 120 generals, including David Patreus, a possible Trump pick, and the former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO forces, have sent a letter to Trump calling his cuts idiotic.

"The State Department, USAID, Millennium Challenge Corporation, Peace Corps and other development agencies are critical to preventing conflict and reducing the need to put our men and women in uniform in harm's way," the generals wrote.

Assuming the con artist is successful, expect to see more dead bodies at Dover and Andrews Air Force bases in the near future.
