The federal government has formally begun moving to get tougher on illegal immigration. @JudyWoodruff reports #PBSNews

Under the new rules, the department would greatly expand the number of immigrants who are prioritized for removal. This includes a person in the country illegally who may have committed a crime but not been charged, who has "abused any program related to receipt of public benefits," or who an immigration officer deems a risk to public safety or national security.

The DHS wants to expand the use of so-called expedited removal, in which migrants do not appear before an immigration judge before being deported.

In addition, the policies call for an expansion of a federal program that enlists state and local police to enforce immigration laws.

For states and towns that have battled against President Trump for sanctuary city status, the most notable policy might be a call to expand a federal effort to use local law enforcement as de facto immigration agents, a program that was scaled back in the Obama administration.

AG Healey: Trump Will Meet "Fierce Opposition” On New Immigration Rules

February 21, 2017

According to Healey, local police will not become immigration agents. “It is not the case that we’re going to allow our local and state officials to become deputized by federal immigration authorities,” Healey said. “You can’t confiscate local and state resources and try to take them over and put them to work, and that is some of what Donald Trump has suggested he is going to do…He’ll meet fierce opposition if that’s his intended course.”

Incredible! We are taking our country back. Soon there will be jobs everywhere. There will be so many jobs it'll make yer head spin.

Yep, I'll enjoy watching you cutting cabbage in a California field and telling me about the job you landed. :D

Or you can come to my neighborhood and work in the Trump vineyard. He's asked for permission to bring in 23 migrant workers. Obviously aliens who are taking jobs away from American workers.

Well I doubt that Trump will produce many jobs if he starts trade wars with our biggest trading partners. But it is impressive to see people come down hard on Trump for enforcing the immigration laws. What part of "in the country illegally" (per the OP) do they not understand?

Nevertheless, I am glad that Trump is not going after the "Dreamers". It seems cruel to me to leave those people's lives in limbo, and I hope America will show them a path to citizenship. FWIW, I am an immigrant, albeit one who came here legally at an age too young to remember.

He's expanding the interpretation of existing laws (which, admittedly, weren't being fully enforced).

I listened to a liberal attorney discuss it this afternoon and it's well within the President's authority. They're starting with the hardcore criminals first though, and despite the rhetoric people are here illegally. It is good to see all you liberals using the racial stereotypes when it comes to occupations though. I imagine it will be very upsetting that your favorite eateries might have to pay fair wages or some of you might have to cut your own lawns.

When he starts fining businesses that hire illegals, then we'll know he's serious. Until then it's widow dressing for his basest Base.

Oh just stop.

Like you said though, he's actually pushing for the enforcement of existing laws, which is A Good Thing (TM). So many people are getting their panties in a bunch over ICE deporting illegals, but they refuse to see that Trump's administration is deporting less than obama's did (so far).

And yeah, the ones that are getting sent back are the worst of the lot. Fuck that whole "don't deport Juan because it would break up his precious family" bullshit line. Juan just spent five years in jail for <felony offense here>, and he's getting shipped back to <Central American country> for the third time. Juan is the dumbass who keeps doing crimes, and if he wants to keep his family intact, they can follow him.

The cops are not expelling random Mexicans from the country because they looked at the cop funny, they are kicking out the shittiest of the illegals because of the crimes they keep committing. If we could do that to legal immigrants (and hell, why not born-here citizens too?), our society would be better for it. It makes my little heart warm up a little bit to see that those asshole "sanctuary city" places will get federal funding removed, and I live in one of them, and it makes me want to go into the office of the elected person and laugh in their face and tell them how much they deserve it.

I'd love to see this happen. With a $10k fine per illegal hired, I don't think it would take long to get these businesses to stop the BS. Hmmm... 10k is a lot of cash, but for some people, they might see that as a standard cost of doing business. Maybe if they can't pay, or if there are more than 10 illegals, then the business owner goes to jail for one year per illegal, with zero parole or early dismissal.

Yup, I might pay more for a tomato, but so what?

Why do libbies hate existing laws so much and do not bother to change them when they are in power? Why do libbies love criminals and terrorists so much?

It makes them feel better to make new laws that take away more rights from everyone. It's like actual work to enforce existing ones, and it doesn't make them get that warm fluffy feeling in their belly because they equate new laws with "doing something".

I've lived in places with high rates of immigrants, both legal and illegal, and for the most part, they are all the same. Mostly. However it's the illegals that actually work that are also commiting identity fraud so they have a social security number to give out, but then they have to pay taxes, so why work when they can get free cash from Uncle Sam?

What I'm not seeing anyone argue is the fact that the ones getting the focus on deportation are the ones who have committed felonies. Yes, anyone who is even arrested runs the risk of getting the boot, but then maybe they shouldn't put themselves in a place where that's going to happen. The numbers for who are getting deported might sound high, but it's still a tiny fraction of the illegals who are here.

One thing that shocks me beyond belief are the illegals who have been here for MANY years and have taken zero steps to get legal. Hell, or even learn the language. No, they want free welfare checks, food stamps (SNAP cards, whatever), driver's licenses, govt forms in their language, schooling in their language, and the right to vote. No. Bullshit. If you're going to move to a new country, do it the right way. Don't bring your third-world lifestyle here and insist that the legal resident taxpayers support your every whim, then get mad when you get deported for breaking serious laws.

There's always fringe cases of people unfairly seeming to be picked on, and I can feel sorry for them. GUess what though? That happens to legal folks too! Don't act like the 1% edge case is the norm.
