Quite right. It's a metaphor open to liberal interpretation. Do two or more folks actually share a mystic 'soul', whatever that is? (Literally, breath -- to breathe is to possess a soul.)

Authors (liars with keyboards) invoke many metaphors of human experience. We get away with it because it's, like, fiction, hey? Blazing eyes. Magickal touches. Volcanic orgasms. Shared souls. The language is illustrative, evocative, not reportorial. It's sexier than discussing pheromonal responses.

And much sexier than writing a scene about the wisdom of prenuptial agreements I think even a chapter about pheromones and the psychological influences they have regarding the impact on wise decisions would be more erotic than pre-nupts !

I agree with you. I was a bit(ok! a lot) insensitive back then. But i couldnt help myself. Since 11 years of age, i developed an ability to know when people are lying just by looking at their eyes. Over the years it grew to such an extent that i could in a way read their thoughts just by reading their facial expression, hand movement etc. You can say, i became like the main prontagonist of 'The Mentalist'. It became somewhat a curse for me. I was never able to conect with anyone properly because of my ablity. When i first heard my friend telling me about his fiance, i understood that they were not in love or anything, just a severe case of lust. I tried to warn him in my way without interfearing too much, but as you already know how it ended. And as i had expected their lust ran out after 3 years and after the divorce it left my friend nearly broke.

Meanwhile, I'm trying to structure a story. It's about my sister, an artist and NYC transit cop whose job was to lead crews every morning to recover bodies from the subway tubes. Yeah, people die there all the time. Fortunately she was out grabbing stiffs and not in her WTC office on 9-11-2001. That is all real. The story: one 'stiff' ain't dead yet, is resuscitated, and she realizes he's her soul mate. Hilarity ensues, especially underground. (I hope she doesn't read this.)

I don't think the term is defined well enough for any meaningful discussion. Take a quick peek at a google search for the term and it's all over the place. Perhaps in order to discuss the term it seems we need to define "Soul" first ?

As a literary term I think it works fine because each reader will define it how they see it.

But with all that said, I like MagicaPractica's take... It leaves it more mystical and beyond our full comprehension and definition.

If you throw into the mix that there are two faces to everyone, it does make your theory that soulmates are twins...what if my soulmate is the total opposite of me? Or, throw reincarnation in there, and you have a multitude of possibles, both like and unlike. As I said before, it isn't as simple as it sounds.

You're absolutely right, with beings as complex and illogical as humans it never is as simple as it sounds which was what I tried to illustrate with my reference to identical, true, twins. They are perfect, biological mirror images of each other, therefore, quite often but perhaps not always, they will know what the other twin thinks, feels and how it reacts as they do this themselves, thus they are as close to the popular (mis-)concept of "soul mates" as is possible.

What is meant by "mostly complementary" is that such a couple complement each other. Where one is weak, the other is strong and vice verse. But the "mostly" indicates that such a couple is not a perfect reverse of the true twins situation as there will be areas of overlap where both are weak or strong.
