When former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid invoked the nuclear option in 2013 — and changed the Senate rules so it would take only a bare majority of senators to confirm all nominees except Supreme Court picks — Republicans were furious. They called Reid's move foolhardy, pointing out that one day Democrats would suffer the consequences of the rules change when they end up in the Senate minority with a Republican in the White House.

That day has arrived. And now Republicans potentially have the power to further change the rules so the minority can't even block a Supreme Court nominee.

However, it takes 51 votes in the Senate to employ the nuclear option. And Republicans may not have the votes. Already one Republican — Susan Collins of Maine — says don't count on her vote.

"I am not a proponent of changing the rules of the Senate," said Collins on Monday evening. "I hope that common sense will prevail and that we will have a normal process for considering this nominee."

Pence hopeful Senate won’t have to go ‘nuclear’ in Supreme Court fight

I’m hopeful he doesn’t” get confirmed using the nuclear option, Pence said in an interview with PBS NewsHour’s Judy Woodruff, referring to the rule change Senate Republicans could pass to break a potential Democratic filibuster and confirm Gorsuch on a simple majority vote.

The position marked a departure from comments made by President Trump earlier Wednesday, when he urged Mitch McConnell (R-KY), the Senate Majority Leader, to use the ”nuclear option” to thwart Senate Democrats who oppose Gorsuch’s nomination. The change would allow Republicans to confirm Gorsuch with 50 votes, instead of the 60 needed under the current rule.

Mitch McConnell said on the Senate floor, "Give the people a voice in filling this vacancy."

The people voted, and the majority of people voted for a Democrat President.

A Democrat President appointed Merrick Garland.

The Senate needs to give Garland a hearing now.

My prediction? Gorsuch will be confirmed without any need to invoke the "nuclear option."

Without some damning evidence being brought out in the hearings, or Gorsuch literally torpedoing his own confirmation, he is eminently qualified. The fact that he does not hold with the 'progressive' view that the Constitution is a 'living' document whose words can be twisted to mean anything they want it to mean is NOT a disqualifying factor.

If Gorsuch is indeed another Scalia then the court is no worse off, or better, than it was a year ago. Trading a 'like for like' is no change at all.

But more importantly if they force the republicans into exercising the "nuclear option" now they'll have shot their wad. It is almost certain that there is going to be at least one more vacancy on the court in the next two years and a very real possibility of there being two. If the democrats force the issue now they will have nothing to say about the next appointment, or the one after that.

If they take a bye on Gorsuch they'll have the argument that they didn't obstruct Trumps first appointee. That they played by the rules but, "they have real problems with this (the next) appointee." That doesn't prevent the republicans from going "nuclear" then, but it does provide the democrats with some viable political ammunition to go public with. And it also provides them with the possibility that Trump with do something so despicable that public opinion will have made a dramatic turn.

The bottom line is that I can't see them expending all their ammunition right out of the box and that all the noise and fury in the press is just that, noise and fury. They'll get their sound bites into print and then make up some excuse for the Plebes later on after they voted for confirmation. And in that regard I also predict that the confirmation vote will be razor thin with only the vulnerable democrats breaking with the caucus.

2nd Amendment: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Neil Gorsuch: “The Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to own firearms and may not be infringed lightly.”

Lightly. Seems to suggest that it can be infringed.

I had to laugh yesterday when I heard McConnell whining about Democrats talking trash about Gorsuch before the hearings had even started. LOL

Seeing that you are so close to the next Presidental election, shouldn't the prudent thing be to hold off on considering a new Justice and let the people have a say in the matter?

I resent the way in which americans use the word "nuclear".

You fags lost the election. Enjoy the next 8 years. Long enough to wean you off Hillarys cock.

Listening to the radio on my drive home Tuesday the host said that currently the vote to confirm stood at 59 for. If it is that close to confirmation then I say save the Reid Option, ie the nuclear option, for when that bat Ginsburg kicks the bucket. Beter yet, confirm Gorsuch and then have Ted Cruz sneak up behind Ginsburg, goose her just one good time so she strokes out, and in two weeks evoke the Reid Option when Bill Pryor comes up for confirmation.

I love how liberals keep posting that Hilary won the popular vote. They seem to forget she won the popular vote over Obama too, but I didn't see him give her the presidency or liberals whining about it when he didnt...(say what you will about Michigan).

I expect the Democrats to lose Senate seats in 2018. Florida's Nelson is 79 or 80 years old and expected to go. There are others. The GOP may gain enough to be above 60 votes. The Democrats cant survive without white trash voters. They hate white trash but cant survive without them. And white trash embrace tradiutional American values. Tranny toilets aint high on their priority list.

I don't get it. When it came time to fill the liberal vacancies on the the Democrats were adamant that the balance must be retained and that their President get his pick and the Republicans complied. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, they should hold themselves to their standards, that is, if integrity matters to Democrats. I am beginning to suspect that they will chuck integrity whenever it conflicts with political goals.

If Democrats prove to have no integrity, the Republicans should do to the Democrats what they did to them on more than one occasion.

Approximately 55% of those eligible to vote did vote in the 2016 presidential election. Of those 55% Clinton won 48% of the vote, Trump collected @ 46% and the other 6% spread out among Johnson, Stein, and whomever the other independent candidate(s) were. Look at Clinton's numbers again, 48%. A majority of the popular vote is 50% + .01, or 50.1%. In what sane world is 48% > 50.1%? It's not...the popular vote argument dem's fall back on is like every other word that spews from their collective mouths, it's nothing more than a lie.

Another Lit Lib not telling the truth yet again. The President didn't "urge" McConnell to use the nuclear or go Straight To The Nuke Option as you post states.

“If we end up with that gridlock, I would say, if you can, Mitch, go nuclear,” is the exact quote from Trump.

Please continue with the lies, violent protests and non action by Liberal Senators.

I.e., he's urging McConnell to go straight to the nuke option. Don't try to resolve the gridlock, just change the rules. That is the truth. You are picking fly shit out of pepper that contains no fly shit.

Show me where he says "go straight" to anything. You and your ilk will add or delete words or phrases in order to have something to whine about. Get over it, you lost.
