Mr President, don’t build this wall!’: Berlin’s mayor urges Trump to learn from history
https://www.rt.com/news/375359-berlin-mayor-trump-wall-letter/

“We Berliners know best how much suffering a division of an entire continent, cemented by barbed wire and wall, has caused. Millions of people have been seized by this division of life. In the end, we, the people, have overcome this division, and it is one of the 20th century's star-studded hours when, at the Brandenburger Tor, the most important symbol of the division, people conquered the Wall and then removed them piece by piece. The Brandenburg Gate stands for the spirit of freedom!"

Don't even get me started on what I see as being wrong with his statement. For starters:

First of all, the comparison is inappropriate and absurd from many points of view.
Secondly, it's coming from one of Angela Merkel's team.

Thirdlly, I've been in a LadyF mood for the last few days. I keep wondering why so many powerbrokers were invested in making the border between the US and South America more fluid by indirectly encouraging illegal immigration.

People say walls don't work, but China built its Great Wall 2,000 years ago and they still don't have any Mexicans.

Apparently the SOB doesn't know the difference between a wall built to keep people in, a prison, and one built to keep people out, defense against invaders.

His electorate might want to rethink their votes.

The German's have a lot of nerve preaching morality to anyone, especially after baking a few million Jews. :)

In many respects they're behaving like reformed smokers. Cultural suicide is ugly.

One doesn't usually get a do over this soon after attempted genocide. :)

Follow the money. This is economic. They, along with all the rest of the European nations instituted 'cradle to grave' socialism (communism light). The populace no longer dependent of their progeny to help them through their declining years quit breeding. Declining population equals less taxes (exposing the Ponzi scheme of all such initiatives). How to deal with that? Import labor (taxpayers?) and hope for the best.

The Europeans were never really worth a shit when it came to assimilation, they've always maintained their own method of segregation. And now they're reaping the harvest of the seeds they sowed. For years the populace swallowed the bile the government fed them and now they're finally waking up to the reality of the situation.

You can bet your sweet ass that Trump is going to do everything in his power to make the UK Brexit successful and profitable. And, so far, it appears he's going to do so without sacrificing US jobs or industry. His attitude seems to be, "I'll cut a deal with anybody, but I'm not going to cut a communal deal with everybody."

In that respect his philosophy is reminiscent of Washington.

Don't you think yourself that's a bit too much of a comparison?

Berlin wall divided a city in half. A single nation, a single city - families were forbidden to see each other.

The wall with South America is a border wall, meant to limit illegal immigration. Not only it's a wall between two separate sovereign countries, it's not like it actually prevents you from crossing it. As far as I'm aware, if you have your documents you can travel as often as you want.

It's only the poor illegal immigrants who will suffer. If I were a US citizen, I'd ask myself - do I give a fuck about illegal immigrants? Especially when I know that they raise crime rates? Do I care for them so much that I would give up better security, better drug flow control?

No. Was that wall built to keep the Eastern Germans from fleeing to the West, or to keep the Western Germans from fleeing to the East?

Simple question.

Seem Germany has not learned from the Rape of Cologne.

Well Gia, they've been subjected to over 50 years of indoctrination and shame, and the "Allies" of WWII can take a LOT of credit for that. Germany of today didn't get there all by itself.

We destroyed their national identity and rebuilt it in an image that no citizen of the US would, or should, tolerate.

No, the Germans are not entirely to blame for what they are today.

Damn those foreigners and their opinions. In America, we will only do what's best for Donald Trump, and that's final.

Following the Treaty of Versailles, Germany in the 30s felt defeated and desperate, and Hitler had the Jews, Communists, and those who didn't fit the physical ideal, to identify as the other, the enemy.

Trump's America feels their freedoms eroding and being threatened, and their standard of living falling, and identifies China, Mexicans, and Islam as the other.

Although the US is never going to move towards totalitarianism, there is no denying the many parallels between 30s Germany and current America, such as misinformation, propaganda, and manipulating news, abrogating agreements and landmark Supreme Court decisions, using fear to govern and legislate change, and you can even throw in building a wall, just to name a few.
Toss a brash, megalomaniac leader into the mix, and it is not too difficult to see why people on seven continents drew the same conclusions, and gathered in protest almost a week ago.

OK sparky, name one, just one, action that Trump has taken that isn't already written in to law, passed by congress, and signed into law by presidents long before his election. Just one.

Fucking moron.

Never doubt the power of stupid people in large numbers....LOL

You stand to benefit, phro. If we build the wall it will limit the number of low-skill workers you'll compete with for jobs.
