Thank you to everyone who has sent comments about readability issues in the new Lit Control Panel.

I would like to dedicate this thread to cataloging readability issues in the new control panel and solving them. I'm sure that we won't be able to make everyone 100% happy, but let's see what we can improve working together.

The two main concerns raised so far are related to:

1. Font Color
2. Font Size

I'm not sure that Font Size is a big issue with readability in the new control panel because we have had some feedback saying that the fonts are actually too big.

This leaves us with Font Color as the major issue related to readability. I would like to figure out where font color is causing problems for you so that we can adjust those colors to make them more readable.

We have also had a few reports that font sizes are not updating as expected when users change font sizes in the browser. We have tested this on Chrome, Firefox, and IE. So far, it works as expected on every combination of devices and software that we've tested. If you are having problems using the browser to change font sizes, please let me know what browser and OS setup you are using and we'll try to recreate that here to figure out what's happening.

I would like to hear about these and any other readability issues that you are having with the new Lit Control Panel in this thread. Please post other issues, not related to readability, in the main New Lit Control Panel thread.

Thank you and looking forward to your comments and suggestions! :D

The https://www.literotica.com/my/#/works/stories/published page has too much white space. We love the sorting features, but the way things are laid out with 4 rows per story doesn't help. It would be nice to sort by votes as well.

As this page is for authors, we want to see the raw numbers. Hover over is an extra step and unnecessary. If space is an issue, then the graphic for PUBLISHED should just be removed. You are on the published page...

Without raw counts for views, votes, favorites and comments readability has little value.

As for fonts, etc. it would be great if those could be user configurable.

I'm in my seventies but my eyesight, tested annually, is still reasonable especially when wearing glasses created for using a computer screen.

The contrast between text and background has always been a problem with some parts of Literotica. The current (old version) example is the list of Valentine's Day contest entries. Every other line is unreadable but I have put up with it. It wasn't a page I visited often.

The control page is on I visit almost every day, several times a day if a contest if running so that I can thank people who leave comments.

It could be a real problem for those with reduced colour vision.

There are design guides for making text on screen or on printed matter more accessible for those with vision defects. In the UK the Royal National Institute for the Blind produces them. It is not just about making the text size larger. Coloured text on a coloured background is difficult even when enlarged. That is the problem with alternate lines on the list of contest entries.

The font used also makes a difference. Some fonts are easier to read than others. The font and shading of the new Control Page break all the rules for accessibility.

Sorry - it's an (expletive deleted ) mess.

Hover over is an extra step and unnecessary.

Thank you for the feedback.

I want to address this one issue specifically because several authors have mentioned it. While hover (or click) to see the raw number might seem like an extra step, from a design standpoint we need some way to control the length of the Views field. Imagine if a story has 15,000,000 views (or even 175,000,000). That will throw the design off and the data in the last three columns becomes less important the bigger the number gets (if we assume that highly read stories are getting more views daily).

I am very open to suggestions from authors on how this can be improved, but I am not sure that we can just throw 7+ digit numbers into the mix without introducing other problems. On one hand, we are talking about how to compact the listing, on the other we are talking about adding more data.

Thank you again! :D

Seven digit numbers for votes are probably rare. Views maybe...The numbers certainly don't need commas.
As we mentioned in other posts. Putting a decimal and a K often save zero space or one character. Maybe numbers over 1M could be truncated to the nearest thousand with hover over available. But it sure seems that the PUBLISHED graphic takes more space than several digits for all 4 raw values that every author cares about (Votes, Views, Comments and Favorites)

As stated in the original post in this thread, the major issue here seems to be font color. The font faces that we are using for most text are web standards with high readability. Just as many users have complained that the fonts are too big as too small :)D). That leaves us with only one issue, which is font color - or contrast if you prefer. The font colors that are being used now pass some of the font contrast guidelines, but clearly they are not high contrast enough for some Lit users. We think those colors can be improved fairly simply to make the text more readable.

Take a look at this attachment for the first draft of our proposed changes:

You might need to right click and select "show image" to see the full sized version of the graphic. The updated story listing (at the bottom of the attachment) passes most readability guidelines without any problems. I would be interested in knowing what you think of these proposed changes to this specific block.

Thank you again for the feedback. :D

The AFTER is a slight improvement except for the statistics which are fainter.

The reverse text for Published is bad in both versions and worse on the AFTER.

Added...

But I'm not an expert in visual problems nor is my eyesight seriously defective.

You really need input from an expert in design for those with limited vision.

For example I'm not sure that programs for converting text to audio would work on the new design. Those programs DO work on Literotica stories because they are simple text with very limited HTML - the less the better.

At worst a story could be downloaded into a wordprocessor and converted to .txt file for the text to audio software.

Over the years I have printed my list of stories from the old control panel several times to keep a snapshot of the status at that time. It ran to over a dozen pages. Now? I'd have to download each of the eleven pages of my story list, consolidate them, hack the result about in a wordprocessor, and then print it.

Added second...

I have been using a very limited choice of styles for reading posts. Most of the time I am on vBulletin 3 Default because some of the others are less readable - again because of text on a background.

Using vBulletin 3 Default to write this post I can see several shades of backgeound and each one has a different clarity of text. For example the Thread title in reverse color on dark blue is one of the least clear, followed by the route to this post Literotica Discussion Board > Main Literotica Forums> etc which is faint text on a default greyish background. The only part of that address that is clear is Reply to Thread - bolded in Black.

Black text on a white background is usually easiest to read as long as the white isn't too glaring. But it is boring. That is why I repeat that you need expert advice which I'm not qualified to give.

Do away with the pastels and go with a dark blue and black on an off white background. Plenty of contrast and far better for reading.

That seems to say that design is more important than readability and usability. That's the problem with designers... Fuck the users, look at the wonderful design.

Just use black type for maximum contrast. Fifty Shades of Grey was a book and a film, not a web design manual.

Actually, black on a yellow background is one of the best contrasts for readability but when did you last see a website use that?

To be specific, in the Before example, the text vanishes completely - I would rate it unacceptable. The After example is better but it only reaches the level of very bad. The information I really need to see - the votes and views - is far too small. Why do you need to put the story title in such large type? I know what the story title is, I wrote it. You've got your priorities all wrong. Think again and stop trying to be too arty-farty.

The thing you have to remember is that you don't pay authors so you need to make things as easy as possible for them and provide them with what they need in the way they need it. If you make it too much like hard work, they're not going to bother submitting stories.

Unless there is a dramatic improvement in the new control panel I will not use it. I will use the old one until it goes and then I will depart with it.

Purpose of the Control Panel

The purpose of the Control Panel is to be a tool for authors.

It isn't visible or used by the majority of those who come to Literotica. It has to be fit for purpose as a set of tools for authors to use. While new facilities are welcome its functionality is of paramount importance.

The design must be suitable for its purpose. The aesthetics of the design are less important than the ergonomics. A very simple set of text legends, buttons and boxes would do.

The new design fails to meet the purpose. I don't like criticising an enhancement to Literotica but the new Control Panel fails the KISS test. Clear, definite and even crude would be much better.

Masnu, can you explain the rationale behind the proposed changes? Can you also tell us how many Lit authors were consulted before the redesign began (to determine their needs) and how you ensured that they were representative?

I suspect and fear that a lot of this redesign is to do with making the site work on mobile phones. That seems to be the fad these days. Quite why, I'm not sure, because I can't imagine many people writing and submitting a Lit story on a mobile so authors must have some other platform available to them. It really is a case of the tail wagging the dog. In reality, all people need on a mobile is to check story scores - they don't need full control panel functionality. A tiny mobile screen is simply unsuitable for many of the tasks that face a Lit author.

(1) This is a page for authors to use. Not readers. Authors create the content that drives readers to your website. Do not screw around with your authors, because without them, you will have no new content. And piss them off sufficiently, and they will move off elsewhere. Make it hard for them, and they won't bother.

You've made the cardinal mistake of making it hard for us. You've made it even harder for your most prolific authors. That's a fail, Manu, sorry to say.

I second the comment that "Unless there is a dramatic improvement in the new control panel I will not use it. I will use the old one until it goes and then I will depart with it." I can't use it as is.

Please leave the old control panel up until you have all of this sorted out. And that could be quite some time because you really do need to do a lot of rework and not just on the colors and fonts. All the comments here were being made when you first put it out for testing and honestly, I don't see that you've taken the main comments into account.

Really, you're fortunate you have this opportunity to work with your users. There've been a large number of comments and they've been fairly consistent over the last few months. The list of site redesign debacles is very long and it's killed companies. Listen to your authors feedback. Work-through issue by issue. Don't switch prematurely. Wait until everyone says "wow, this is great." When you're getting those comments, you'll know you're there.

And now, on to issues.

(2) Story title size - way too big. This page is for authors. We know our stories. I don't need BIG titles. What I do need is a color and contrast that doesn't kill my eyes. That light blue font you used for the titles is hard for me to read on a monitor. On my phone screen, I can barely see it. Your old control panel text was totally readable. Make the contrast better - a much darker blue and a clearly defined font. I think you're using Helvetica, which is okay, but reduce the size and make the text much much darker.

(3) Story information (number of views, rating, # of ratings): increase size of font - it's too small. I have trouble on my monitor and I hate that huge difference in text size between story title and the other information I want to see. Remember, this page is for authors and that information is our bread and butter. I want to see it at a glance and I want to see it easily. I do not want to strain my eyes. Increase the font size. Please.

(4) Number of views: give me the whole number, the entire number, give it to me at one glance. Now! I do not want to mouse over. I do not want to piss around. I want to SEE IT!!!!!!! I cannot see it. I want to download it to track my stories. I cannot copy and paste from a mouse over. I have to write it down manually. You have just fucked me off big time with that one stupid little thing. Sure, it's all very techy, but Manu, I do not give a shit. I WANT MY NUMBERS. And I want to see it easily. And I want to be able to copy it.

Worse, I can't do mouse over on my cell, and after I post a new story, I check a lot of times over the day (or evening) to see how its going. One - I cannot read that itsy bitsy text on my cell and Two - you haven't given me the number I'm looking for. And on this page, I am your customer. I'm the one you're working to satisfy and whose needs you want to meet. You have not met them. End of story. Just give us the goddamn numbers. You have acres of space on the page. use it.

# of ratings. Ditto. And you don't even have mouse over for those. I want to see. I do not want to see one decimal place. I want to see it incrementing single vote by single vote. No mouseover, no frigging around. In a readable font. We're talking Pavlov's Dog's here. You do not pay us to write here. Your payment to us is scores, view counts and rating counts. And comments. But the view counts and rating counts are our food. DO NOT TAKE THAT FOOD AWAY! Let me be even blunter. I want to see the entire fucking number. Do not fuck around with the view counts and the rating counts. Give me!!!!!!

You might get the idea that I'm pissed off here. I am. These comments were made months ago and not just by me. By many of your beta users. Listen to us Manu, for we are your content creators. I know it's hard to take criticism, even constructive, but really, it's that or you toast yourself. And this is the authors page.

More later......

We haven't stated it that bluntly, but yes! Nearly every point made in Chloe's post is right on the mark.
In particular the space and data lay out for https://www.literotica.com/my/#/works/stories/published

We would like the format to fit in a single row or two at the most, with sorting on all columns.

Title / Description / Date / Category / Views / Votes / Score / Comments / Favorites / Awards / Hot Icons / Config Icon

Links take you to things an author wants to see.
Comment Icon - Manage the comments (delete etc).
Comment number - View the comment.
Favorite Icon / number - Who Favorited the story
Config Icon - Manage comments & voting for the story

I couldn’t understand why youd round off the numbers, but this makes total sense. Plus its easy to see the full number by simply tapping the screen on my phone.

On a side note, I also like posting on an mma website (sherdog) and when they did a site redesign, people were outraged. Now, no one would want to go back.

These things take time to get used to.

On the other thread, I was one of the first to list my dislikes. But after playing around with it on my phone, and seeing the additional improvements, I think it'll be great when its all said and done.

And lets all face it, this website and control panel looks badly out dated.

This is a fair point, but those stats are tied to how well our stories are doing, which is in turn tied to our egos. Any vagaries in those numbers are just going to drive us crazy, so it's probably best to figure out how to work around that.

It seems like you're worried about large numbers pushing off other data, so the question becomes "How do we make the width of a number irrelevant?"

Let's look at how each entry is arranged. The entry is split into two rows. The first row is tall, and has all the biographical information about the story: Title, description, category, publication date. The second row is small and has the statistical information: publication status, badges (Hot/Contest Winner/Editor's Pick), viewcount, score/votes, arranged one after the other.

That layout depends on all that statistical information remaining a certain size in order to stay contained in its field, though. Your best option would be to stack the numbers, so they have more horizontal space to grow into on the off-chance it's needed.

How do you do that while keeping it neat? Instead of two rows, split each entry into two columns of fixed width and variable height, with the first column covering the biographical information, and the second covering the statistics. Certainly you'll need to make the biographical column wider than the statistical, but because you have strict character limits on titles and descriptions, you won't have to worry as much about table-breaking inputs.

As for the administrative options -- comment management and submission settings -- keep that small second row for each entry and drop those options in there. And put your bookmarking options on the top-left corner of the entry, next to the title -- where the user will intrinsically look for them.

For the record, I hope I'm not coming off as a smarty-pants; I'm not a web designer, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were issues with this proposal. Redesigning a site that people have had almost 20 years to get used to is a real bastard of a task, and you're bound to run into issues. As sympathetic as I am to the concerns expressed by other posters here, I really like the idea behind the new panel and appreciate the hard work it took to get this far. It just needs a little more to make it more comfortable.

Right on the mark. 7 digits would do nicely. If there's a story here with more than 9, 999, 999 views I'd love to read it. For tatings 99, 999 should be fine. Anyone over that should be publishing. The graphic? Looks nice but doesn't tell me anything.

My Followers page. Nice idea to be able to see all my followers. I have 50 pages of them so the execution isn't practical. Just give me a long list and again, text for user name is too big and wastes real estate on the page. You have to thnk practicality and usability here. As it is, its not usable. I like the concept tho, but just make it one big list.

Just as many users have complained that the fonts are too big as too small :)D). That leaves us with only one issue, which is font color - or contrast if you prefer.

No. Text size IS a major issue. I think you'll find the users complaining of too big font are complaining about the text size of the story title while users complaining of too small are complaining of the information row. Dont ignore this one - its crucial to usability. Don't take my word for it. Ask

...And lets all face it, this website and control panel looks badly out dated.

That just about sums it up.

Never mind the functionality and the usability, it's got to look 'modern'.

Perhaps it's just as well you don't live in Europe. You'd be tearing down all our historic old buildings because they look "badly out dated" (sic).

The Times newspaper in the UK - a paid for site - tried something similar to this redesign; the web designers went ahead and changed things just to make it look 'modern'. The result was that they lost hordes of subscribers and they've had to make a lot of it free to access to keep up the viewing figures. Does Lit want to go the same way? If you try making similar changes on the story pages, you'll see views dropping like a stone and you will totally piss authors off.

I don't go into the Control Panel to be bedazzled by the clever design of the page. I go into it to get information that I need to see how my stories are doing and to help me in planning my writing. Sorry guys, if you want to play around with design, there's plenty other places where I'm sure they'd appreciate your help.

Yes, there are some good things here but they haven't really got anything to do with this redesign - letting us see who our followers are; telling followers when we publish a new story; a 'to read' list to stop people using 'favourite story' as a reminder tool.

If you want to do something really useful, find a way of encouraging people to vote - roughly one per cent of readers actually vote, which is pretty poor. That's the kind of thing we really need, not some unnecessary fiddling with font colours and sizes.

Keep in mind only a tiny % of your authors will come this far to respond and as yo can see, only a very few of those will bother to offer you constructive input. The rest don't care and will just vote with their feet. Run some stats to find your most viewed as authors and ask them.

I think there's been enough useful suggestions here that theres some obvious next steps. I'll do what's obvious over the next week and go thru all the various discussion threadz and summarize the comments and suggestions. There are a few but most never make it this far.

This is all stuff that was raised early on. And I know its tough upgrading thd look and feel. You're doing it the right way keeping the old control panel available. Dont get rid of it until you've eorked thru this.

Alternatively, give us some sorting options. Followers are sorted by the day they joined, oldest first, which doesn't help me at all. If I had the option to sort them alphabetically, or by the day they started following me, I'd probably be able to make more use of that.
