For whatever reason I wasn't aware the Rio casino in Las Vegas has been without power since December 29th. This seems all the more odd since having been to Vegas I can't imagine a hotel/casino being without its clients for a week, especially around New Year's

Upon reading the story, this came to light:

The outage was caused after a sink in a service area overflowed and shorted a fuse in the tower's power system. The hotel moved to a backup generator that was compromised by water from a fire sprinkler and gave out the next morning.

WTH??? What moron puts electrical fuses anywhere near a water source?

An engineer. Need we say more!

It's probably incorrectly worded. I'd guess that the circuit was shorted, which caused the fuse to burn out. The fuse was probably nowhere near the sink.

Basement utility room beneath the kitchen. Not unheard of.

Here's another story with essentially the same reason though the backup generator problem is discussed differently:

http://www.newsday.com/news/nation/rio-casino-power-outage-forces-900-room-evacuation-officials-say-1.12824159

The problem first emerged Wednesday when a plugged sink in a service area accidentally overflowed, shorting out the fuse in the main power system and causing a small electrical fire that prompted a more limited evacuation, Broome said. Management then relied on a backup generator, but that was later compromised by water from a fire sprinkler and it too shorted early Thursday.

A backup generator, compromised by water?

Sounds like Fukushima to me.
