TED Talks: Capitalism will eat democracy?

It murdered that fucker with a shovel and a blowtorch long ago.

Historically capitalism and democracy have co existed better than socialism and democracy. However, high concentrations of wealth can corrupt democracy. We need to reduce the wealth of the plutocracy by heavily progressive taxation. Moreover, taking a huge chunk of the plutocracy's wealth would pay off the national debt and fund domestic spending programs.

I'm sorry you got only two replies. Your thread must have really sucked

I've proven that I'm no economist, but I hate the way America handles Capitalism. Corporate greed has destroyed our spirits. While the American citizens all fight in the streets, in the classroom, on the internet, and even here in the forum, corporations are playing PR chess to maximize profits. And they are succeeding, which is dismaying.

Under-regulated capitalism will not only eat democracy, it will eat our natural ecosystems to the point that the entire world becomes similar to the "who-is-the-biggest-troll" conflict that takes place regularly on the General Board. The continuous-growth economic theory will lead to intense conflict in an over-populated world that offers no escape from human forms of insanity.

You don't need all sorts of material stuff in your life to be happy. We could move voluntarily toward an economy that is more sustainable while meeting basic needs and allowing for a reasonable level of emphasis on free market principles.

Many humans find deep satisfaction in high quality relationships with other humans and/or with nature, not in the constant desire to acquire wealth and power over others. The latter set of incentives is based in the most primitive part of the human brain, the part of the brain that will cause some to react to this post with an angry knee-jerk response.

We have the 1% super wealthy and super powerful, and then we have 46% of the population who are in awe of and easily conned by this 1%. For many of these people, this obsession with easy answers from celebrities is like basing your financial and happiness plan on winning the lottery or hitting the jackpot at the casino.

Think about it, we will soon have an alleged "populist" president who made his money in large part by exploiting others. This is another situation where a rich and powerful celebrity has convinced the working class that benefits will trickle down to them if we turn control over to him and give massive tax cuts to the rich and powerful. This has not worked out for those at the bottom of the pyramid in the past, and will not work out this time either, as least in the long run.

At the macro level, this same President-elect has pledged to significantly reduce regulations and exploit our natural resources in a way that will destroy more of our last remaining natural areas and accelerate global warming, thus leaving a huge quality of life deficit to future generations.

Under-regulated capitalism is gradually eating our support system, and yet so many people still support the myth that we can just keep growing and growing with no long term consequences. Because the conflicts and environmental change are taking place gradually, they are relatively easy to deny. It's like people who assume asbestos inhalation is not bad for them, because it did not make them sick immediately after exposure.

What is your definition of capitalism? I think to understand the different points of view we have to understand how we are defining capitalism as an economic system.

My definition of capitalism, an economic system that involves market competition, goods and services produced for a profit, with private ownership of the means of production and distribution system.
