Germany and Japan were both industrialized, advanced countries that got sidetracked for awhile. In the middle east, the only countries that even have the potential or desire to be modern industrial or post-industrial societies are Israel and Iran (and maybe Turkey).

The Arab countries are not even close. Even the wealthy Arab countries are wealthy because of natural resources, and are doing nothing to develop modern diversified economies.

We should GTFO and stay out.

However, until fusion power becomes economical, the oil states will remain juicy targets and messy entanglements. Would that every Saudi-financed Wahibi-crap-spouting overseas mosque could be shuttered -- but petrodollars are fungible and hate flows freely. The beauty above may take the cake, however. Since Obama was first elected Democrats have lost the Senate and House, a buttload of governorships and state legislatures. The whole damn country (almost) is red based on precinct maps from election night. The Democrats are a party fighting to stay in the toilet bowl while the public has its hand down on the handle.
That doesn't prove the public loves Republican policies, but it sure seems the same public is pretty sick of the alternative.
