Serious question, why is it controversial to have separate restrooms for men, women?

People are far too picky about this shit (pun intended). If you don't want to go in to a bathroom, find one that you do want to use or at least can tolerate. When you really have to go, especially number two....you don't care! You have to go NOW! Deal with the embarrassment after. When you get down to it, we all pee and poop. Get the fuck over the embarrassment.

The thing is that if you mind your own business and everyone else did, no one would know who is in the next stall.

In my salad days (oh so long ago) I attended more than one Rainbow Peoples Festival. Folks strolled openly in various states of undress. Basic sanitation consisted of open-air latrine trenches where folks of all genders and body types stood or squatted as necessary. Nobody was raped. We mostly tried not to see what was emerging from those bodies.

In my state of PA any person who teaches children in church has a background check and is fingerprinted and furthermore doesn't allow children to wander alone, even accompanies them to the bathroom and delivers children to their parents once class is over.

I have been to many locations in the UK, including a local small supermarket, that have unisex toilet cubicles. It's no big deal.

Some larger places have rows of cubicles that are unisex. Each cubicle includes a wash basin, mirror etc. Many disabled toilets are unisex.

If there is a large row of toilets, apart from baby changing or disabled, some are male urinal only.

The only irritation - for men - is that they have to queue like the women to wait for a cubicle to be free.

At open air events with rows of portable toilets, all the toilets are unisex. The internal state of some of them at the end of the day can be appallingly bad.
