I live in the Pacific Northwest. There are plenty of forest service camp grounds around. The way these work is for a person to setup camp, then register at the self registering station.

We pull in, set up my very fast 4 man tent. Roll out a couple of camp pads and we have all the room and privacy we want. 30 minutes later, we take the tent down and move on. If asked by a ranger, we would just say that we just got word at home that needs our attention. Never been asked, but prepared.
