A lot of people around here don't know Dylan for shit. That's ok, people pay attention to what's popular in their time.

Dylan first and foremost is a poet. He uses music as the means of delivery, but a poet nonetheless. There are others out there, Paul Simon comes to mind, and to a lesser extent Don Henley. But Dylan's work is timeless. By that I mean that what he wrote/writes means one thing today and another tomorrow.

So I'm going to use this thread to go through some of the works he's churned out over the years. I'm going to try to save his Magnum Opus for later and I hope that those of you that know what it is do likewise.

Life, love, and movin' on.

we mustn't forget that the rolling stones got their name from.... oh, right. never mind.

I call this my $1000 dollar song. Some one once bet me Hendrix wrote it. Some think this is his Magnum Opus. And it is probably the tightest 'tone poem' he wrote. No wasted words.

PS. Bonus points for recognizing another song that the Bass line was used in.

Most writers today come from the whores and queers who loiter at the docks hoping for a boat fulla sailors to come.

Even song fragments from decades ago resurface.

This one started out as a fragment from some sessions back in the late 60's. Got turned out as a bootleg recording (Robert Zimmerman Basement Tapes?). Damn near 50 years later it was picked up and completed as a song by the Old Crow Medicine Show as a bluegrass release.

Wagon Wheel

Darius Rucker (Hooty and the Blowfish) picked it up.

How can it be possible that some one can't read Dylan as a poet? To reiterate what you said, music is mearly a vehicle to deliver his words.

I was backward discussing this just tonight.

How could Trent Reznor release Nine Inch Nails Hurt, and for idiots to only applaud it years later when Johnny Cash covered it.

Very true. Reznor is very edgy, but also quite deep. Also, phenomenally talented. He composes his own music, then records each instrument, and vocals in studio himself. The band is just there for tours. The only other artist I have ever heard of doing that is the late Prince.

That said, Dylan deserves the honor. Shame he was not recognized before now. I was aware of most of his hits, even those recorded by others, but now, after doing my own research, and discovering just how prolific he was,I must say that I am richer for it.
