Being an asshole has the benefit of acting as a filter. You will attract an array of people who think they deserve it. additionally, it gives one the ability to bail without needing much explanation. I can only speak anecdotally, but being an asshole is a tool for someone who has a low opinion of himself or herself and/or isn't capable of anything beyond short-term interaction.
I wouldn't take it personally. It likely has very little to do with you.

And there are those who make it clear that's who they are. I have no problem with that, and can respectfully remove myself from the equation. It's the being a pure asshole for the sake of it that really puzzles me. You're having a lively debate...respectful on both sides...or so you think until the childish name calling happens. Wow.
Oh I know it's not me. I just will never understand what they hope to gain.
Now that you mentioned it, wonder if the president elect is on here ... "masked" of course.

Desperate, fed up with females, want a quick easy time, annoyed it's not going well, easily frustrated when they can't get their way, just naturally how they are, perhaps you find what they're doing to be that of a dick but others wouldn't. Just so many possibilities, and so many different people.

I get TONS of weirdos PMing me, I'd say 90% of them, but I've never had anyone be an asshole to me via PM. It makes me wonder what you're doing to incite this type of behavior.

The steps to avoid this phenomenon of general douche-baggery...
1. Create a buddy list.
2. Enable PMs only from buddies and moderators.
3. Place clear instructions in your profile to talk to you in the open forum only if you want to communicate.
4. If after sufficient communication has occurred that shows said poster to not be a douche. . proceed to add him or her to your buddy list.
Voilà

I've gotta say, everyone I've pm'd (or been pm'd by) is incredibly polite, easy-to-talk-to and just generally lovely. As a woman, I kind of expected men to be potentially abusive (sorry, guys! :-D) because, after all, I am pretty filthy-minded, but so far they've all been perfect gentlemen (with dirty minds and mouths!). The girls have also been sexy and delightful too. Just my observation!

Pretty much this. People online will say shit to others that they'd never say face to face. They can unleash their inner asshole to make up for the deficiency in the dick department.

unleash their inner anything, really. I don't have an issue with people being jerks, but there are plenty of walking dildos that want to get off to anything they can. i am pretty positive that a lot of the shit said on here wouldn't be said in person, it'd probably land them in jail. it's pathetic. once they talk to me like a human being and i'll respond to them like a human being, otherwise, eat a dick.
Great advice! I think I will be doing this from now on. (My PM box has been getting a workout lately.) Just got to work out how to do it first...lol.
