I know that liberal was a term of abuse in the US and has been since the Civil War, but in the UK Liberals are seen as weedy, wet, knitted bobble-hat-wearing nobodies. That's unfair because the Liberal Democrat party has some sensible policies and got their fingers burned by being in a coalition government with the Conservatives. They acted in the wider interest of the country as a whole and lost support because of their association with unpopular policies.

They mean well but are ineffective.
