I don't usually keep an eye on the number of posts I've made over the years but as of late, I've had the nagging suspicion that that number has dropped from time to time. Has anyone else noticed anything like that? I swore I had around 36k earlier.

I'm wondering if the threads that laurel closes over 5k has anything to do with it. Where do those posts you make to such a thread go? If they are really gone, do they come off your count?

Closed as in deleted or closed as in still around to look at but not make any new posts in?

And how is the number of posts calculated?

Is it an informational item that is updated only as you add posts? I would say yes to this, but they could recalc them every night to exclude deleted posts.

I see a conundrum though.

I own a large forum (nothing to do with erotica) that uses the same software as this forum.

The only thing that can reduce a post-count is if messages are actively (and permanently) deleted.

Closed threads will not reduce the post count. The posts on closed threads are still there, and still count. But deleted threads are different - and their removal will reduce your post count.

How are post counts updated? Every time you post, the number is incremented. Every time a post is deleted, the number is decremented. There's also an overnight batch job that does a simple count and updates each user's post count in case it went wrong. However, I've never seen the batch job actually change a count. The increment/decrement logic seems to be very reliable.

Since the threads are no longer visible in the forum list, I'm assuming they are deleted.

ETA: I PMed Laurel to see what happens to those threads.

Blame NSA or Putin's hackers.

I'm sure they've stolen some of my posts.

Hey, I didn't mention pedophiles or dog-fucking.

At least my post count keeps rising. Wait till I hit 9999...

The forum will only display back a certain number of posts/threads when you search. However, if you know who started the thread, you can locate some of these lost threads, such as this one:

http://forum.literotica.com/showthread.php?t=955906

Threads closed for exceeding 5000 posts are not deleted, and therefore are still part of your post count.

Thank you.

Is there any other reason a post count would go down? I swear i had like 36K a few months ago.

Nope, deletion of your posts is the only thing that will reduce your post count.

Lit has been using this software for a long time, and my finally have needed to purge some of the oldest posts. That wouldn't necessarily mean the endless threads over 5,000 posts as that's a relatively new phenomenon, but might include some of the game threads used to get over a thousand posts back when we were Noobs.
