My latest noir tale escaped from its cage and wants to be a series.

For now its 25,000 words of prison violence, gangster violence, and deplorable characters. I have a huge fund of Cigar City Mafia (Tampa) material to do a series of long stories. Al Capone owned a hunting lodge close to my home. We actually started life as a movie colony in the 20s, I'm 30 miles from Tampa.

Is the gangster theme worth doing?

I agree...but then I am a huge fan of Mafia intrigue! I've thought of doing one myself on it, but don't think I have that kind of time to invest. I lean heavily towards novels rather than shorts.

Thanks for the opinion.

People loved the Sopranos, so I'm sure they'd like a rated X version.

Late to the party, but I agree - lots to like there.

Not the same locale and not about the Mafia per se, but if you don't know him yet, I think you would enjoy James Lee Burke's noir tales set in and around New Orleans. They're not all great, but they often are and all are entertaining. Unfortunately, he died not long ago. His daughter took up the/his pen but I have not read her book yet.

Good idea, James. Nice to get the mob away from Miami and Vegas and Chicago, and I am quite fond of Tampa and south.

I own one JLB story called TEXAS CITY 1947, about a kid who feeds his stepfather to a gator. Wonderful! I'll look for more.

Plenty of noir and hard crime came outta Tampa circa 1950. Even a James Bond novel is set in Tampa. In my tales Ybor City is Little Havana. The cruise ships dock down the street and the tourists come for the sex and drugs. Two crime families battle for the business, Reverend Al's Holy Ministry and the DiNatale Family come from New York in the 20s.

I will be happy to read it. I'm working on my third mafia novel right now, turning it into series. So for my sake, i hope there is demand;-)

Are you writing about the Florida mafia?

Such a tease, James...I can hardly wait for publication! Really.

Someone once wrote an entire novel of 127 pages about what really was a boring concept for a story; an old man and his obsession with a particular fish. But because he was such an excellent writer, the novel is nowadays recognised as one of the greatest of all time.

And why would you think that was what the story was about? Is Little Red Riding Hood about a talking wolf and a mostly obedient girl?

Its the only Hemingway book I own. As an aside I once lived at Pordenone of A FAREWLL TO ARMS, and Zaragoza of FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS.
