I am working on a story that requires some special characters such as the ones here...

ὅπερ ἔδει δεῖξαι

In my story it's part of an ancient message that needs to be decoded. There isn't a good way to write around using these letters as the protagonist nor the reader should actually know what it says... and in reality it is just gibberish derived from using multiple internet language translations.

Getting these characters in this thread was as easy as doing a cut and paste from my story's text.

My question is, can I simply paste these characters into the story edit window and have them show as-is in my story?

At least maybe, as it has picked up accent marks for me in the past. You can check this out, though. Write your story the way you want it and then cut and paste it into the submissions box. You will get a preview and you could tell from the preview if they will go through. You also could pose the question to Laurel directly in a PM.

It works...just tried it in the submission form.

I'm too lazy to check now, but I wonder if we can insert Windings fonts? I suspect that would fail, that only Unicode characters would work.

I guess if all else fails you could include it as an image

Someone who sounded like they knew of what they spoke, possibly the bard, pointed out that the preview window isn't always a reflection of what gets posted. I think it was in a thread about the horizontal rule where that comment was made, a year or so ago.

Fonts are possibly a different story than the horizontal rule. I think its worth asking laurel to be sure.

There's a whole rook of weird characters under UNICODE.
You might get away with using them.

I think I'm going to write a short test story and insert these characters. It will be a story I intended to publish anyway. I'll just need to figure out a way to work the ancient text stuff into the story.

I'll let you all know if it works.

I once used HTML to change the font on the fly in a story...it was rejected. The reason is obvious.

The weird characters worked in the text window in the submission preview, whether it would make it to the story display page is a question for Laurel.

Probably needs to be things from the standard ASCII set? Depends on how the system is set up and/or how much Laurel allows. Might be one of those things to ask her about directly via PM.

The board here apparently is compatible with unicode characters.

I think unicode stuff is interpreted through the browser rather than being considered html code, though the character coding setting in the html header has some control over that I guess.
