I was doing an rp here and sadly real life has called my partner away. I really like the story line and would like to finish it into a complete story. I will pm my partner to see if she is ok with that and will ask her to approve it before I post it. My question is, if she does not come back, should I do it? Either way I will give her credit and link to the original rp thread.

Thoughts?

Someone asked me to take over a character since the co-writer hadn't been heard from in over a year. I agreed and began posting, the co-writer showed up and had a fit. In my opinion, it is easier to start the thread over. People don't write the same way and a new person starting in an existing thread, throws off the flow of the story. This way you can make tweaks with the new writer that fit the original story idea. Or the two of you might just go in a different direction altogether.

Just my opinion

Thanks fr sharing.

I did send a pm t m co role play partner. I really hope we can continue together, but if not I really want to write it as a story. I may go ahead and begin to write, but not show anyone until I hear back from her. Unless someone says there is a time frame where you can move on. I was thinking a year, but your story threw that out.

If I did it as a role play, I would start over and slightly rename everything.

Depends. Are you planning on cutting and pasting the role play or using the rp as an outline while you flesh out your story? If you're cutting and pasting their words, getting their permission is the respectable thing to do. However, if what you're creating is merely based on the rp - just a credit should be enough.

Had a bad experience with co-writing. Everyone has a different mindset with what they want to do with characters. Never again.

I'm planning get on using the role play as an outline. Trying to keep the spirit without making a direct copy.

Also, I debated here or the role playing thread. Since my goal is to take the role play and use it to write a complete story, I choose here.
I have no idea how to move it, if I should at all.

I don't see the problem if you just use the role play as an inspiration and scene setter for a story written in your own words and to your own resolution. Ideas and themes can't be copyrighted and they can't be "stolen" if the originator hasn't used them commercially already and can point to financial damage done. I've rewritten role play scenarios as stories before--even posted one or two here. Just write a story inspired by the role play.

Ok, so as long as I'm not doing it word for word, and I will still credit my rp partner, I should be OK then?

If you can't be more creative in writing than just avoiding word for word, I suggest that you not even bother writing. That role play is already written. There's no need crediting your rp partner for a story you've written that was inspired by the role play, but you can if you wish. That might be a nice gesture.

Inspired is what I meant, and thus not a copy of the rp. Maybe I should work on my communication skills. Lol. I want to tip my hat to her just because I really enjoyed working with her.
