The category seems strange for the lit crowd. I was curious what sort of feedback people get in that area.

My current beast is a slow build with no sex yet and I thought that might piss off readers if it doesn't get to stroke time fast enough.

Has anyone chopped a story in two and tried plopping the build up in non sexual? Did it work or flop?

I have an 8 page story here with barely a peck on the cheek until page 7 and its done very well.

It depends on whether or not the story can hold their interest and make them look forward to the eventual sex in the same way people enjoy foreplay before actual sex.

My theory is that if you have a longer piece a lot of one handed readers are not going to read it anyway. They want quick wanks not 6+ pages so the crowd that would demand fast action aren't reading you anyway. People who will invest in a long piece will usually wait out the action as long as the story is good.

Granted, I don't have a huge amount of stuff published here, but the best-rated one so far has been posted to Non-Erotic, and is currently #13 on the Top List for that category:

Four Little Words

So I'm going to say there's not only a readership for that sort of thing, but if you tell a good story they'll repay you in kind with high marks. :)

Chopping a story's non erotic parts off doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Most good story chapters tend to finish on a teaser of what is to come in the next chapter, most people like to call those "cliffhangers". It's that element that moves the reader along in a story and makes them want to turn the page and find out what happens next.

I said it the whole time I've posted stories to this site... There's more to a good story than just a fucking sex scene.

I love the idea of Lit having a non erotic section on the site..... Maybe one day Lit will no longer be just a "total erotic site" and be seen as a "fictional fantasy story site". If it were seen as that, it might be a better marketing scheme for them as a whole and draw in larger audiences :)đź‘ đź‘ đź‘ Kant

If I remember correctly, one of the winners in the 2015 Winter Holidays contest was in the Non-erotic category, and obviously it did very well. I read the story it read very smoothly and was a bit of a tear-jerker about army vets. I forget the author's name but I think it was Tara Neale (or some such) - the story was also one of the nominees for 2015 Best Non-Erotic stories.

So, to answer the question - yes, Non-erotic stories can do awesomely. Several of them over the years have been contest winners - I think sr17plt may have one as a Winter Holidays winner a while ago.

I have a few non-erotic pieces posted, including Maggie's Gift, which took first place in the 2009 Winter Holiday contest. Most scored quite well.

There have been 26 nonerotic story placers in Lit. themed contests (https://search.literotica.com/searc...ncy&sort_order=desc&contest_winner=on&author=) DGHear at least thrice and Lynn at least once. Alas, never me. I've had ones do very well in the contests, though.

My highest rated story is in Non-Erotic. Comments have been positive. Not many views though. I think the only people who looked it up were my existing fans.

It was fun to focus on plot and historical detail without wondering if I had enough sex in there yet.

Some readers love a long slow buildup. And some, of course, hate it. But if the story is ultimately going to be sexual, I'd probably keep all of it out of non-erotic.

The highest rated one of what I have posted to Lit. is also nonerotic--but it's in the name of an alt.

I have three stories in Non-erotic. One has a good score, the other two, not so much.

One of those three stories got me a book deal with a minor mainstream publisher. That single book deal is soon to be nine novels. :D

So i would never downplay the non-erotic section of Lit.

I haven't tried 'chopping' a story. But I do have a couple of stories that I have thought about moving. They are both vaguely erotic. And they both have brief sexual scenes - but the scenes are no more than you might find in a lot of 'non-erotic' stories. They have both had mixed reviews: love 'em or hate 'em. Yeah, I might have to talk to Laurel. :)

My favorite non-sexual comment was, WHERE'S THE SEX!!!

That PILOT is such a kidder.

Whatever that means.

I supose it's your way of "ignoring" me.

Surely, the 'non-erotic' story is the ultimate challenge ?
A well-told tale in good language, tugging the heart-strings every which-way.

PS. 4 little words is a damned good story.

Good story well told, but a weak sentimentalized ending. I commented further in the comments section

Thanks for commenting, ishtat! I can't be everything to everybody, so I appreciate you taking the time to point out the places where you felt I could have improved it. :)

I would think making a musical out of a barber butchering his clients would be more "ultimate" in challenge.

I don't see an ipso facto difference in challenge in whether what you're writing is erotica or not--certainly not an increased challenge in writing nonerotica.

Nor should you be everything to everybody. I also think that whilst my suggestion might make for a better story (in my view), I can also see that it would make it a less popular story. In the end your(the writer's) decision must trump mine (the critics). .:)

But, Pilot, you are the professional Author. We are but wannabes, playing in the sand.

Not on Literotica. And I'm not making a fortune from erotica--I've just found a way to play in the sand and breaking at least even for the play time--not that I see the relevance of your last post. I just thought the one before it was way over the top. You seemed to be striving for one of JBJ's posts that was irrelevant and outrageously "off" at the same time.

Writing or emoting sentimentality is not a sin. Tear-jerking is not a sin. Audiences like to cry and otherwise be moved by simple words and deeds. Critics may have seen so much that their tear glands have dried up. Too bad. But a non-pr0n story with a hint of tragic romance - it's moving!

Ah, challenges. IMHO writing an erotic story without sex is a challenge if we haven't done so before. Many of we amateur authors post on LIT because we want to tell tales of sex. We've read such stories and we're comfortable writing them. Leaving out the sex whilst constructing an evocative tale that pleases LIT readers -- yah, that's a challenge!
