have you seen his workspace? it might help guide your choice.
my own desk is usually covered with drawings large and small, as well as a monitor & keyboard.
no room for anything freestanding, except for one little lego sculpture my boy made.
so i've got a few things mounted on the wall instead.

No, I haven't.. He hasn't seen it yet either. I ought of it as a first day gift. ( considering I probably will not see him on his actual first day)

I have two personal photos hanging on the wall in my office, and one small framed photo that sits on a bookshelf. They are all of my horses, though, not family.
ETA: Depending on the office, a little potted plant or bonsai would always be nice too. I have a handful of plants in mine.

I think a plant is a great idea. He had some plants in another office which he really liked. I better wait and hear Bout light in the office first though.
You can always slip a note in his bag or something, as a thoughtful start to his first day.
