Are twins too rare and implausible to include in many stories? Does too much erotica depend on / exploit twins? I just found this NatGeo article about the rarity of twins in the natural world vs the relative abundance of human twins.

...scientists suggest that twins may be rarer in nature than among human beings because two organisms living in a single placenta can lead to less nourishment for each individual. In the tough world of nature, that can result in young that are less hardy and prepared to face the wild. In people, that is less of an issue now, thanks to the benefits of society and intensive parental care.

In people, the natural rate of twins is roughly one in 80 births, with identical twins making up roughly a third of that. The rate of identical twins has tended to be relatively consistent across nations and cultures, although it may tend to run in some families. The rate of fraternal (or dizygotic) twins tends to rise with the use of certain fertility assistance drugs.

Do the math: 1/3 of 1/80 is 1/240, so about 0.4% of human births are of identical twins. Of 300-odd-million people in USA, at least 1.25 million are identicals, out of at least 3.75 million twins total. We'll more likely encounter twins than members of many other demographic groups -- like pr0nstars.

I've included twins in my stories, but usually not identicals, because I previously thought them too rare. I sometimes wimp-out with "Irish twins" -- those are siblings born within a year of each other, probably because daddy Paddy has had babymaker Brigid popping them out every ten months or so.

Other options for identical twins (ITs):

* Separated at birth and adopted out, they unknowingly meet in adulthood and immediately go queer for each other.
* Physically identical but with opposite personalities, they seem like Jeckyl-and-Hyde, especially as each avoids the other.
* They're totally identical and telepathic-empathic; each totally feels (and reacts to) the other's fucks and frustrations.
* sex resort for ITs; crime gang of many ITs; mad scientist mass-produces ITs; Zika-like virus induces IT births; etc.

I added a fraternal twin as a "hook" to see if there would be want for more from the readers. Of course there was. I read that story now and I really don't care much for it. I used the fact that it was a twin, less for the twin kink and more so I didn't have to establish age again.

I think twins happen enough to include them in stories, not so much in every story.

With the developments in IVF, and it's increasing accessibility, and insurance coverage, twins are becoming much more common. I have three set of nieces and nephews who are twins. IVF babies are fraternal twins, though. Identicals are more rare.

I have a twin brother, and so does my husband, both conceived naturally. We are all fraternal as well. But because of my twin brother, and my husbands twin brother, I think I have to stop reading this thread. Ew.

Not especially rare in my world. My sisters in law are identical twins, I knew two pairs at school, a few at uni, and have met several others since. Including the pair who did the boy friend swap stuff, to see if they could. He couldn't tell them apart, or so he said. The two girls dressed identically, all the time, because they knew it did everybody's heads in.

The telepathy stuff is true (or else you believe in a shit load of coincidence).

Even Georgette Heyer did it with one of her Regency novels. And she had them swapping sexes as well - the boy pretended to be a girl and vice versa. Can't remember the name of it but it's good.

I'm a twin. Although I get the idea people find this fascinating, it really isn't. It would be nice if twins weren't used as an erotica trope, but at least I can choose not to read it.

I've done non-twin multiracial siblings and mother incest -- mom is Native American, son's father is Dutch white, daughter's father is Caribbean black, and they'd all been separated for years. I'd not thought to make the kids twins. I should try a loose Korean mother raising her twins by Nordic and Zulu fathers (yeah, she pulled trains) maybe set in a segregated regime. Shall I go over-the-top with a Latina triplet?

I did a story with albino androgynous fraternal MF twins -- nobody could quite tell their genders till the fucking started. Play the multiracial card here and it could get interesting.

So, the black, white, and brown triplets have the colors of their fathers but the slender build and fine, smooth features of their yellow mother. (Sorry for color stereotypes.) For fun, the kids are male, female, and hermaphrodite (one each) and they often switch their gender identities. But no tentacles.

I've used twins in quite a few of my stories for different reasons. I have used two sets of brother-sister twins in different stories (in one the girl is a six foot tall, big boned girl, the brother a scrawny runt who barely scrapes in at five feet tall); identical female twins in another; and for comic effect in another, creepy male twins who talk together, one brother starting a sentence, and the other finishing it.
