Braless Women in Public 2016

Truly delightful.

That picture brings back memories of the 1960s when one fashion development was the introduction of low-cut dresses that left the breasts exposed. It never caught on to any great extent but I was fortunate enough to see the occasional example being worn around London at the time. Sadly, few photographs of this trend seem to exist. Newspapers of the time were forced to cover the nipples with black dots, which rather ruined the effect.

The difference was that it wasn't just a case of a woman being braless under normal clothes or a boob popping out. These were dresses that were deliberately designed to expose the breasts.

Of course, this was nothing new in fashion. In Tudor times it was quite common for a woman to have her breasts uncovered as this illustration from the Roxburghe Ballads of the time (sorry, hardly erotic by modern standards of illustrations) shows.

The otherwise elaborate costume seems to emphasise that the breasts are naked, as was no doubt the intention. Petitpatapon's picture has something of the same quality.

The fashion re-emerged in France in the 18th century and spread to other parts of Europe.

It is long overdue for another revival.
