Culture, as I learned it, is the whole system that operates a society. And what works one place doesn't work everywhere. Tho we pretend one system fits all societies.

I recall how Muslim immigrants to my town had major problems when they built fires for boiling laundry and roasting goats (in gated communities). Goats and caldrons fly back in Bosnia, but not here.

It got worse.

Whats legal back home may not fly here, and when teachers and neighbors discover what youre up to when you go home for visits, they get upset and call the police. Youre not in Kiwikistan now.

On a related note: I'm not saying that racism amd xenophobia don't exist, because they do. But sometimes the immigrant is at fault as well.

For example: Even if, in theory, I'm more similar to those from Commonwealth countries than other immigrants, the reality is: it was just as hard (or even harder) for me to adapt, than it was for other immigrants. Four painful fucking years.
The difference is: I made an effort and mingled with a lot of people from my adoptive country + I tried to blend in and mold myself after them. Whereas other immigrants still live in secluded groups and don't make an effort to mix and adopt the adoptive country's way of life. If they don't want to, why did they emmigrate in the first place? One can't have his cake and eat it too, as they often say.

I'm not saying that they don't have their rednecks there too (every country has them), but you'd be surprised how civilized it is - far from the sheep and goat herders than some people think they are.
Their main cities beat many large US cities, by far. The only difference is that one often has a forrest in their backyard, and modern amenities downtown.

In the military I spent time in a few countries: Vietnam, Germany, Italy, and Spain. I fit well in Spain because my basic personality is a close match with the average Spaniard. Lotsa Spanish in my gene pool. But mostly Scottish and French. I can pass for a Spaniard, though. Life in Spain was no problem for me.

I have no respect or use for Kiwis. In World War 2 they were knaves and scoundrels for their treatment of US Marines sent there to save them from the Japanese. Kiwis stay on my FUCK YOU List.

I took every psychological test there is, back in grad school (we always need test subjects), plus I have plenty of experiences with diverse populations of people. Nordic and black women do nothing for me. Women with black hair and brown skin get my attention. I do best with Spanish/Hispanic, Italian, and South Asian females.

I do poorly with Brits and Germans and French.

Strangely, I like non-American blacks. So I'm not a rigid racist.
