It would be really great if the admins could leave some sort of indicator in the comments section whenever they take it upon themselves to remove a comment. That way, the blame goes where it belongs instead of making the author look like a spineless coward who can't handle criticism. I've noticed this seems to be happening a lot lately. I don't know if there has been a change in policy, or if the admins are simply being more vigilant. Either way, don't blame the authors for it!

Its typical when the author's reply is too harsh. Kiss the troll's ass and move on.

Way to misread the OP, James. I'm sure he was referring to reader comments, not author comments.

I think erasing them altogether is better than leaving a note that something was erased, which just shows that there was warfare of some sort going on (although sometimes it's just an irrelevant URL advert). If you're afraid of being thought to be a coward because it disappeared, I think your reaction is overblown and you're giving the commenter too much control over your emotions.

I'll get a little more specific, then, as it seems my point/request has been misinterpreted. I recently published a story, and a long-time critic wrote a comment on that story. The comment wasn't offensive or combative. For whatever reason, the admins deleted it without notifying me, and the person who left the comment accused me of deleting it.

It would be nice if the admins could simply leave a "comment deleted by admins" note in the comments section when they do something like this. I don't imagine it would take that much effort to do so, and it would alleviate the false accusations. Simple request, really. I know the admins check in here from time to time, so I thought I'd put it out there.

They accused you in another comment? Just delete that one too.

They accused you in an e-mail or PM? Either ignore it or just say admin deleted it--and then add a "fuck off."

This is the Internet. Those ragging on you are going to claim not to believe you any time it's convenient that they do--and they are going to call you names to try to engage you in a flame war. If you don't just respond with a "fuck them" attitude, they are controlling you.

The OP's observation and request are both valid in my book. And I don't sense a whole lot of upset, just that, 'it would be nice if' and 'would make our experience better if' sort of thing.

I'd venture to point out that if you're a person who doesn't normally possess a fuck off attitude, adopting one for the sake of that commenter is putting yourself under their control as much as anything else. ;) If you change your way of being for another person, it whatever direction, you're playing into their hands.

Agreed though, to be publishing on the interwebz requires a thicker skin. But I won't be growing callouses for the select few assholes. I prefer to be myself. Even if that means getting upset now and then.

:rose:

From the few comments I've seen deleted from my file by Laurel, there has be a "Deleted by Admin" note but it doesn't stay up long.

I'll bet another reader reported the comment. Usually, THE ADMIN, doesn't just drop in and delete comments unless they are reported by someone.

Naw, like this comment doesn't control me either. I don't usually even bother to respond with a "fuck off." I just move on and let "whoever" stew in his/her own juice. ;)

I had one of those a couple of days ago.
I just assumed it had been spam.
Now I'm worried someone is out to get me.
Thanks.
;)

Which I'm sure works for some whoever types, but I'm sure there is a faction of whoever types that cackle and go "I got to them, they erased my comment" fill in beavis and butthead laugh here.

There's no total win on these things authors can just handle it as they see best and no amount of this is right and this is wrong is ever going to get a universal reaction.

I agree, Laurel pretty much just said in that LW thread that she wants authors and readers to report these things because the site cannot possibly be aware of every comment that comes through here.

I get admin removing spam, but if they're removing comments based on they don't like the content-other than if it mentions one of the things they won't allow in stories-then isn't that violating their freedom of speech terms?

Then again freedom of speech is a term very much used out of context here and most places these days.

I have them in the past but I have read them in my recent list.

Several have been just advertising spam. A couple have had off-site links. Only one was abusive.

A number of times, I've written a comment on a story, hit Preview, then apparently forgot to hit Submit and guess what? The comment never appeared. I've done it as recently as last week. It's very possible your long-time critic did the same.

However, I agree with sr71plt. It is more perplexing for the commenter to get absolutely nothing for their effort. No acknowledgement at all. The comment just isn't there. Why should you care what they think happened to it? It's just...not there. You don't owe an explanation.

It could be the PC includes personal info on the poster. Otherwise, I thought the admin never removed anything from PC.

In the old days no rude reader escaped unpunished but Laurel deleted my replies to rude readers, because my remarks intimidated other rude readers. I take no prisoners. But today I don't read comments, I use LIT to store stories. I don't care if theyre read or used for toilet paper, I'm over the bull shit.

The only reason Laurel would delete your posts is if someone reported them for being combative or racist or both. Anyone want to make a bet?

Thank you Swingerjoe

I was the one who left the comment in question. Swingerjoe actually named me in a response, So I know that the comment was sent.
I wasn't aware that others could get a comment deleted besides the author. Anyway , I apologize to you SJ for doubting your words.
