What is the purpose of the European union?

What purpose does the European Union serve?

Why does it exist?

What do they do?

I'm guessing that it falls down to four centuries of war that engulfed Europe. After WWI and WWII they decided anything was better than the status quo. I'm talking about the precursors to the final EU pact.

It was to keep the Germans down, the US in and the Russians out.

Now it's mostly about keeping the US and European elites ever richer and the little people ever poorer and ever more powerless.

Union is a brake on the fratricidal pathology of Queen Victoria's heirs.

The EU serves the noble purpose of forming a drain for all the extra money Europe has.
It gets rid of that pesky cash by funneling it into the pockets of corrupt politicians who desperately need a third home and another Bentley.
Without the EU we would all be drowning in our own money, instead of the brave few that sacrifice themselves to a life of horrible undeserved wealth and financial security that most can only dream off.

Wow.In a nutshell.

BTW
Oggbashan also started an interesting thread in the Political forum, and this added perspective by a scott. captured my attention:

I can't speak for the situation in Northern Ireland, which is greatly complicated by the political divide between unionist (traditionally protestant) and nationalist (traditionally catholic) communities. Except to note that as the nationalists do not yet constitute a majority of the population, though demography suggests they will in the not-too-distant-future; it seems certain that a significant proportion of the traditionally unionist electorate must have voted to remain.

In Scotland the situation is completely different. Anecdotal evidence - all I have to go on at present - is that the victory of the Little Englanders south of the border, and in parts of Wales, has already driven many Scots who voted against Independence two years ago, to support it now. It is even possible that the membership of the SNP will become larger than that of the UK Tory party in the foreseeable future. It is currently about two-thirds as large as the Tories in membership terms, and the Tories draw their membership from a population of 65m, whilst the SNP has just over 5m to draw on.

The disappearance of the UK, and the removal of several important business headquarters to an independent Scotland which will, one way or another, remain in the EU, are now inevitable.

The merger of Northern Ireland with the Irish Republic seems to me a rather longer-term consequence of 'Brexit', though I stand to be corrected by those with better knowledge of the politics of that island
.

I'm not trying to pull a conspiracy theory here, but since this thread gears this way:

To the person prone to such things this whole dramatic situation looks like it's been orchestrated on purpose. Meaning that someone who knew the ground temperature so to speak, flamed things gradually with either outcome in mind:
to fragment the UK, making it less of the international power that it used to be,
or to destabilize the EU.

Given that this is a conspiracy thread: I'm adding another contribution:

The European Union looks like just another failed experiment.
A much milder and more civilized version of Hitler's dream of a 'unified' Europe under his command,
and of the Soviet block/ versus Western Europe experiment.

And THAT is what should actually be in that dog resource 'Wikipedia.'

As Donald Tusk said yesterday: 'the ordinary people don't share the enthusiasm we have for the EU...'

Alas.

Hitler wanted the German territory and Germans confiscated by the Allies after World War 1. Every inch of ground he got before 1 September 1939 had been German in 1914. Poland didn't exist before 1919 but got a large chunk of Prussia.

May want to check that one.

Yes, please do. My wife's grandfather came from Poland and was delighted when it became a country again in 1919. His father had to flee Poland after the abortive 1846 attempt at independence.

Feudalism in the 21st Century.....buncha guys the people have no say so in representation, gathering money, applying bullying tactics to get their way

The European Union is Hitlers idea. One oppressive socialist government for all Europe.
