It's been a long fallow period. I've not written much in the past 1.5 years. I squeaked-in a few tales a few months ago but it's been thin since, till now. I'm hot on an involved stroker sequel and have a few more tales cooking. They may not see light for some weeks but they're coming.

I notice a trend in myself. When I'm not writing, I'm reading. I read much mainstream for many months but the last few weeks have seen me re-devour many of my fave LIT stories and authors. That was fun. And maybe stimulating.

I read and write for fun, or because I must. When I write for LIT, I find writing more interesting than reading LIT tales. That's how I can tell my muse is alive: writing my pr0n is a greater thrill than reading someone else's.

Question for authors: What do you do when you aren't writing? How do you relate to a sleepy muse?

I still write, but the stories often end up in the incomplete draft folder.

I read or watch a bit of TV. My muse doesn't seem to sleep much--not even when I'm sleeping.

I do that, too. I've been reading up a storm over the last year. Also catching up on movies I haven't seen.

Aside from the above activities, I do a lot of traveling. And I let my muse sleep as long as she wants. When she wakes up again, I'll start writing fiction again.

I keep my iPhone beside my bed at night. Chances are that within a half hour or so of laying down to go to sleep, I get an idea. So, I'm quick to pick my iPhone up and type out the idea in rudimentary note form and comeback to it later. 👠👠👠Kant

Guess I gave away my insomnia ideas...haha

I read, but mainly I write something, every day, whether I feel like it or not. I've read a lot of quotes from authors that basically say you have to turn the faucet on if you're hoping for water. I also follow Julia Cameron's advice about refilling the well with images. I look at pictures online, go to art galleries and watch good movies. Exercise and healthy food, limiting sugar also help me. I highly recommend The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron. :rose:

The same thing you do. Reading leads to inspiring the muse.

I tried that, to my utter surprise I found I wasn't Stephen King or even a sober McCarthy. I have to wait for the picture to blossom.

I do still write on my phone, but I read somewhere an author said the best advice she was ever given was to carry a notebook with her.

These days I do just that with a small twist. I go to the mall and sit somewhere and have coffee and cake and watch people. Somebody is bound to do something that makes me write it down, even if it's just a facial expression. A smile is a smile, but when someone smiles with their whole face, you tend to notice other things, like red ears, and sparkling eyes and a straighter back and a lifted chin. People watching gives my characters characteristics. Listen to me talk, like I'm being paid to write... lol

I read every day

...and write most days.

I've met several authors who claim they rarely read anything here. Some of them are clearly not telling the truth as they will freely describe other author's works in their very next comment, but...some are telling the truth.

...and I sort of feel sorry for them. They've closed themselves away from the best muse of all. The thoughts of others.

If you are in a fallow period, read. A hack steals an idea and reproduces it; an honest writer spins an idea into a new direction.

Show some humility... Cite your source, talented writers and film makers do it all the time by making subtle jokes in their work.

Always look on the theatre marquee during a tracking shot!
