I would have expected far more from George Will, a person for whom I have much admiration. You don't leave a political party simply because you don't like the nominee for the first time in the many decades you've been a member.

Trump was certainly not my first, third, or fifth choice either.

But nothing could be more counterproductive or treacherous to the values they presumably hold dear than for the Republicans to sabotage the results of the democratically held primary elections by which Trump earned the nomination.

The "Dump Trump" movement is the triumph of arrogance over principle and is utterly shameful. It promises to do as much or more damage to the Republican Party as the worst of a Trump presidency is likely to do. All to the joy and entertainment of Democrats everywhere.

I would have thought George Will would have been smarter than to have contributed to their delight.

Will, who worked on President Ronald Reagan's 1980 campaign, also said at the luncheon that Trump as president with "no opposition" from a Republican-led Congress would be worse than Clinton as president with a Republican-led Congress.

When asked by PJ Media about his message to conservatives, Will responded on Trump, "Make sure he loses. Grit their teeth for four years and win the White House."

It isn't just about not liking the candidate. It's about watching the best your party had to offer losing out to a racist imbecile.

It'd be like De Beers deciding to make their signature line out of cubic zirconia. The brand is tarnished entirely. Those who remain with the party will have to live with the fact that that's what's now on their fingers.

Had the party's "best" done a better job of addressing the fears which Republicans have as the result of eight years of a feckless Democratic President, they would not have had to lose.

Contrary to popular Democratic opinion, Trump has not created these fears. But he has certainly shamelessly and effectively exploited them.

I've known in my heart for years that this time was coming. The electorate has been starving for someone who "tells it like they perceive it to be." Since that has ALWAYS been what political candidates were supposed to be good at, I was hoping that at least ONE of the candidates I could have lived with would have done a better job of it than Donald Trump.

I was sorely disappointed.

I get that Will does not want to be associated with him (or Paul Ryan for endorsing him) but I don't recall him speaking up over the last few years to decry the very actions that led to Trump's popularity. Namely government obstruction and inaction by republicans and xenophobic fear mongering.

I hope he is the candidate and that he gets trounced and maybe republicans will stop being so obsessed with denying gays equal rights and legislating women's health and get to the actual business of running the government again.

I think that the Republican Party has reacted badly enough to Trump that Will should be smart enough to know it's not the party he wants to abandon, it's just Trump. Trump's supporter base isn't really made up of party people. Like Sander's people, they mostly are folks who came in from the outside and took advantage of the party structure that neither Trump nor Sanders were really previously a part of--and will walk back out of the party after the election, one way or the other. In terms of continued party control, the Democrats were probably smart to hold back more super delegate positions in party faithful control than the Republicans have (the Republican process has super delegates too).
