With humans, I'm thinking particularly about our brains and their need to desperately seek to ascribe meaning and create patterns.

You could say it's all about passing on genetic material, and I suppose on some level that's true. It's just that our meaning-making-machines are so nimble, creative and caffeinated, and we project that so fervently onto everything, especially sex.
