Can anyone explain why open borders is a good thing for our country?

I'll wait.

If you can only reply with a personal attack you're showing everyone you're an asshole.

It's not and we don't have them. Checkpoints, fences, passports and such. Plus more people have been leaving than coming so we're good.

In a strict Libertarian sense, they are good for all countries; the free flow of wealth, resources and people.

In the current context of the political elites our border has become a semi-permiable membrane where wealth and resource leave while people come in to facilitate and expedite the looting of the largess of the Treasury.

There it is. If you were to eliminate ALL social safety nets I'd be one of the first to call for open borders.

It worked for the states, but it was a two-way street, not a one-lane dirt-track to serfdom...

;)

In a fully open global economy, wages and standard of living will, over time, find worldwide equilibrium.

Good for Africa.

Not so good for the USA.

Unless you like your rice delivered by parachute, of course.

We don't all know which country you're talking about, Miles.
It's a big question for the British just now, with the referendum on our membership of the European Union coming up.

In the British context, we'd have a difficult job getting our seasonal fruit and veg harvested without open borders for seasonal workers who don't mind back breaking work for minimum pay, and the number of Brits who have property in France and Spain would have a much more complicated life if they couldn't travel back and forth with all sorts of stuff, if we had full-on border control in the sense of 'closed borders'. Not that there isn't plenty of [necessary!] faf even with supposedly 'open' borders, given the security threats we all have to live with.

In a strict liberal sense looting the Treasury and stealing money from Peter at the point of a gun to give it to Paul are perfectly acceptable...in the name of fairness, of course.

Well, there is that. Not to mention the sharing of all diseases all the time. One could readily make the case that the "Black Death" was a direct result of open borders.

What country are you referring to. None have truly open borders that I know of currently. Of all countries had truly open borders no passport required for any travel there would be a whole host of positives and negatives.

Oh and Ishmael you want a society where the old the disabled and the sick are left to fend for themselves and live or die at the mercy of strangers? What a hateful world that would be

Yes, it is so unfair that other countries are corrupt and inefficient making it of paramount importance that we take in everyone who decides, the hell with making a difference, the hell with revolution, we'll just flee to the US and then demand it adopt our form of government because it has the resources to actually fund the types of things we have been fighting for for generations now in our home countries.

;) ;)

Oh, and Tommy, you want a society where every individual that crosses your border gets to live off the back of the taxpayer?

That would, I expect, lead to an amplification of the current and widening gap between the super rich and the rest of the population, you can see the trends now in disposable income of the many getting less over time while the hours worked increase. Global disaster if you ask me but from the ruins perhaps we would learn from our mistakes and build a sustainable model.

Officially we don't have open borders.

The Traitor unofficially has ordered immigration laws to be ignored.

So you do not believe in family or charity?

Clearly, like so many who have grown up under the auspices of the nanny state you have decided that the grasshopper is more important to the colony than the ant. The very idea that only the state is love is pretty much abhorrent to we, the self-actualized adults who have provided for our own future. It is criminal and, to borrow your word, hateful, to then turn around and demand that I support others, even if it means putting me at peril of impoverishment.

Well, Ish, how long have we been lectured about the multiplier effect?

;) ;)

Everything we spend on them enriches us with a booming economy...

Take any one of the PIIGS for example.

You don't get it, do you?

Any wealth you have accumulated was either inherited or stolen from the less fortunate. Right now children are starving because of rich people.

I was really stupid. I should have figured out how best to live off of the largess of the government, which is an infinite source of wealth. If I stop paying taxes and participating in the economy, of course, someone else will step up to support me, even if it is just the governmental printing of money.

Pretty much. The cost of the illegals to the taxpayer is in the $100's of billions/yr.

Ishmael

So what? Half of all Americans don't pay any taxes at all. In fact, some of them are recipients of what our government cleverly calls a "negative income tax."
