Defining differences porno, erotic

Basically I'm hoping to see opinion, discussion and maybe some arguement on what the differences are, maybe some examples of each, for us to look through, hell use your own pieces if you like.

I read these two statements

9. Just because your dirty ditty is full of cocks and cunts it doesn't make it erotic, subtlety wins every time.

9. Subtlety is always more effective when writing erotica, better the velvet glove than the barbed-wire whip......unless it's BDSM......even then I think the softer approach works best,

In the 1001 rules thread, and was wondering at where and why people draw a line?

Are we saying anything that references anatomy gratuitously is stricken from artistic appraisal, or is there a way of writing pornoesque poetry that is digestable?

I write a lot of crap erotic and pornographic poetry, however I use it as a ways and means of experimenting with ideas and techniques I want to incorporate into my normal writing, a throw away erotic/pornographic piece fornme is the easiest way to experiment with ideas before attempting them In something I actually want to invest in.

Good question, tods. Porn versus erotica is a matter of opinion. What is porn to me is erotica to someone else and vice versa. I think of porn as writing with graphic sexual content whose only purpose is to stimulate, so to speak. Erotica otoh may or may not have graphic material in it but also has value beyond the sexual stuff. Maybe it presents images or tells a story that is sexual in nature but goes beyond wanking material. As such it's usually more subtle and sensual. That's just my opinion and I prefer reading the latter to the former (most of the time ).

Angeline has not posted much erotica here, but I have an alt who has. Here are a few examples of what I'd consider erotic but not porny.

I prefer erotic poetry that is more of a "show me" thing then porno which goes over as a "tell me".
However, a well placed cock or cunt has a certain shock value :)devil:).
As long as the use of those words aren't superfluous because if they are, it's overdone, they lose the eroticism and the poem turns into porn to me.

We should have a Challenge each member to write two poems (one they consider porn and the other erotic) and the others critique as to why they agree or disagree with their choices.

I once read this:

Erotica is a lot of story with a little sex.
Porn is a lot of sex with a little story.

Not necessarily so, some erotic poems are all sex but delicately put.

Sorry, I didn't realize the thread was about poetry. I don't do poetry, so I wouldn't know. My error. I was referring to stories.

Does Dr. Seuss count as poetry? If so, then I do do poetry.

I would have thought Poetry Feedback and Discussion would have given you a clue ...........

Not quite sure what Double blind is, is that putting the poems up without the names of the poets responsible?

Yes.....or like I did, with a poll. [actually, in a real double blind, the convener shouldn't know either but that'd be hard to do in here]

When it comes to prose and poetry, good writing will satisfy the reader as well as sexually arouse. Bad writing is likely to do neither.

Give up any idea of differences.

Porn I can write (in fact I just did in case this Challenge comes about) the erotic is proving far more difficult.

I think that both porn and erotica are calculated to arouse, but with erotica there should be an additional poetic element, intended to tickle your aesthetic sense as well as your zones. Or to put it differently, when porn is well-written, it's erotica.

Well, perhaps you should try it again and see if we're more inspired and inspiring. ;)

i don't smoke

but these were stunning. beautiful erotica.

for me (no examples right now) the difference between porn and erotica is that porn is full on in-yer-face and concentrating on body parts, whereas erotica involves the head and heart as well - which, for me, makes a way more satisfying poem.

I thought I just said that in a cliched metaphor :D

Thanks for all of the contributions so far

can't we have a mid-way midway house -----Pornorotica !?!
both pornographic & erotic !

I don't write porn; I write erotica!

Artificial people need an artificial division.

Call it whichever you want ..... people around you are going to call it the other.
