What size company would you rather work at?

What size?

I'm self employed. I hate having to do everything, but I like not have to answering to anyone. My boss is an asshole.

why do i have to i have to work for a fucking company?

oh wait - better deals on health insurance
retirement plans
pretend security in the form of a paper check

fuck the fucking company.

also, you can't legally have a company of one. company by definition is more than one. your poll is fucked.

What's your reasoning? What have been your experiences? What's your job title?

I have had more work experiences than most, so your questions don't resonate with me in a conventional way.

I take on challenges which catch my attention, in surroundings i enjoy, and am usually overpaid compared to my peers.

Ps: neci, if you incorporate, you can have a company of one. I use a holding company of one and most times, my company contracts my employment to others.

I've worked at a small company (30ish) and a large company (several thousands). As a consultant, I worked for companies much bigger. They each have their positives and negatives. It was more fun working at a small firm. But the volatility wasn't as fun. Larger companies are more political, in my experience. But they have offered a lot more security, at least in my industry.

This has been my exact experience too.

Consulting work taught me to be diplomatic: all this responsibility and zero authority.

Qwest (whatever the fuck they call it today) has a large office in Denver. One of the rooms was a sea of cubes. On the wall was a map of the US. The work groups were in states. Bob in Idaho. Mary in Florida.

Good or bad? Depends on your type of job. If you are a mover and a shaker there are more dicks to suck and asses to kiss. You are going to go far, son! There are also rules and regs and bullshit. Small is nice until some jerk makes going to the office a big drag.

First things first. What does it pay?

Are people referring mainly to private companies? Or to state-owned to?

I worked mostly in "state-owned" institutions so to speak, some bigger than others. And when it comes to pros, I noticed a few differences between bigger versus smaller places.

But as to cons: regardless of size, they all had in common the "let's be good actors and play the we're perfect employees game, in order to avoid being backstabbed over nonsense" and the "crab mentality". I suspect that might be a socialist or communist-type mentality, I guess.

It depends where you live.
In Canada there is a corporate entity of 1 called a Professional Corporation.
Usually, doctors, accountants, dentists, geologists, engineers, etc can set up this corp for liability and tax income purposes.

I like working for the company that pays me the best. I couldn't care less how many other assholes are working there unless somebody is having a birthday. That's always good cuz there's cake and the more employees, the more birthdays and the more cake.
Sometimes some asshole will bring cupcakes. I don't want a cupcake, I want cake. People think their birthday means they can fuck with tradition.

I have been with a privately owned German small to mid size (300 people) company for 19 years in sales. Back then I covered half a country. So my boss was more than 3000 miles away. Now we have 70 reps and my boss is 150 miles away. Now I only cover one state. I'm a lone wolf by nature and they leave me alone. In return I produce high amounts of new growth turnover. A win win for both.

I sit behind a desk and hope I don't get fired everyday. Also a win win but of a different sort.

Working culture, environment and general philosophy have nothing to do with size.

This is not how I, for one, determine where best, for me, to be employed...

So would the size of the company be how many employees work at the QuckieMart that you work at, or the total number of QuickieMart employees in the corporation?

It depends a lot on the manager too.
(S)he often shapes the employees behaviors and the work environment: culture of blame or witch hunting, versus collaboration and collegiality.
I've seen asshole-ish employees who ended up behaving like semi-decent human beings, with a change in manager.

I worked for a huge multi-national chemical company. Managers were always looking to move up. Never had a manager the same for more than a year. Blind eyes were turned to environmental infractions and crimes. Incompetent managers were moved sideways.

The job paid very well and benefits were acceptable. The severance package when they closed up operations in Ontario was very good.

Working for the company made me a tree hugger. I would never work for them again and would protest any new chemical plants being opened in my community.
