It's freaking huge. Luckily loss of life has been low. Two teens hit a fuel tanker and died. 80,000 people on the move, taken a full % point of Canada's growth for this quarter, making oil prices move up, dropping our dollar, $9B to insurers. Only the weather can stop it now. They need rain or at least strong winds to drive it away until it burns out.
Thankfully loss of life has been low. Heart goes out to their families. A big shout out to the fire fighters, in town and in the bush. The Mounties seem to have everything under control, as usual.

The whole country has relied so heavily on Alberta and oil for our economy thanks in great part to Harper et al that it will be a struggle to come back.. Poor Notley's has had nothing but bad luck since she took over.

The way the populace are standing up to help in any way they can is admirable and as for the fire fighters, some working 24 hrs with only short breaks, is incredible. A tragedy brings out the best in people apart from the few who, like vultures, see it as an opportunity and do their best to cash in.

Globalization of the economy. Canada is a resource country so that is our role. An economy based on what you make is more advanced then one based on what you find. When commodity/oil prices are good our dollar soars. This makes our manufacturing more costly, especially to foreign investors and customers. A dollar on par with US is bad for business as we are an exporting nation. Internal manufacturing allows the production of consumers goods to help alleviate swings in commodity prices.
We have to get the dollar down to about .73US and somehow get oil back up over a hundred a barrel. Do both and we will do well.
The globalization really takes away what a lot of governments can do to take control of their economies. Especially if those plans and policies adopted work against globalization. The Free Traders have won and mercantilism is still strong.
Profit wise globalization works. It's benefit to poor countries from manufacturing jobs is generally a win. The 'have' countries suffer from the wealth redistribution. Our social networks buffer the poor and the globalized rich get richer. Our middle class falls and the middle class is risen up in the poorer countries. Profit driven mostly but very socialist at times.
It's getting to the point where the rich are going to have to suffer wealth redistribution. If only to keep the middle class happy.
