Best free malaware blocker?

My laptop shit itself and I took it to a tech, who diagnosed a terminal illness. Before he opened it up, he did a full diagnostic, and discovered that my pc had a load of malaware on it (I have the report).
I was running the standard Macafee plus Comodo.

Now I have a new pc and I am worried that this one will also get infected with malaware, so I am looking to find a decent free blocker to install.
What does everyone here use?

My old pc was 5 yrs old and the keyboard and a few boards inside are covered in rust! I couldn't believe it when he showed me! I am having the HDD turned into an external drive so I can retrieve the data, but am concerned I will end up transferring the bad shit as well so I want to protect my new pc before I connect it.

Anyone?

Spybot 2.0 is my personal favorite. Easy to use, lightweight, and extremely powerful. It will catch many things. Other than that use the typical Windows Defender/Security Essentials.

Malaware, Avast Premium & Ad Block Plus. Clean every logout with CCleaner.

MacAfee is crap bloatware along with Norton.

I've always used malwarebytes, avast or AVG, spybot and adaware and it's very rare I have any issues.

Defender and the built in Windows is a decent firewall. Avast is free and works well as an anti V. Run Malwarebytes and Superantispyware once a week.

Norton and Mcafee got everyone convinced they're the shit but they mostly suck ass. Slow, hogs and nowhere near good enough.

Norton doesn't play well with others. And, as you say, is amassive resource hog.

Norton is just fucking awful. Even when you try to get rid of it, if you don't know what you're doing it will stick around forever and bug you. Hard to believe someone hasn't burned down corporate headquarters over the damn thing. And like you said, it doesn't play well with others at all. Put another AV in there and it starts getting pissy.

I went with what several internet friends recommended free.
No problems............yet!

They will all try to sneak in other additions and upgrades that cost.

AdvancedSystemCare8
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
CCleaner
Along with what's built into windows 8.2

IObit Malware and SmartDefrag5 snuck in and seem fine.

I also use IObit Uninstalller for those additional things the others add.

I'm sure I don't need everything but this computer has worked well for at least five years.

I find the biggest bugs come from porn crap.

Cost to fix was more that cost of a new pc.

I moved to Queensland briefly a couple of years ago - one of two states in Australia where the humidity is so fucking high you have to swim everywhere.
That's the only time the laptop was exposed to moisture.

The only reason he reco'd it is because Norton & McAfee cornered the preinstalled bloatware market, Bitdefender pays a commission to those Geek Squad big box store techies who sell an install.
It's even less effective bloatware garbage than Norton or McAfee

They were the second response, but inline with the general consensus.
Malware Bytes, AVG & Ad Block Plus. Windows Defender & Firewall actually work fairly well. Finally.

The key to whatever you pick is to keep them updated.

Agreed. I hate Norton beyond reason.
I like malaware and malwarebytes.
And I run Mcafee's Stinger now and then.

What are you talking about? It's rock solid, has minimal footprint, and is free.
