If he had been declared 'insane', he would not have committed any crime and psychiatrists could declare him 'sane' in a couple of years time and he would walk free...

He was sentenced to the maximum possible term of 21 years and was ordered to serve a minimum of 10 years in prison. The time he has already spent in prison counts toward the term.

The sentence could be extended, potentially indefinitely, in the future if he is considered still to pose a threat to society. Norway does not have the death penalty.

I'm a bit rusty on my Norgwegian law. Maybe the norm is to assume that people who did this sort of thing are still a threat... The bar could be low. Maybe not.

is the highest posible Penalty in Norway, but he never will get back as a free man, when his sentence is over, he´ll stay rest of his life in a forensic Hospital, with no chance of any kind of pardon.

At least it´s the same penalty, like 99 years in a prison.

some translator on the news this morning said the 21 years was the maximum allowed but he'd be in custody so long as he was deemed a threat to society. depending on how society's perceptions have changed in 21 years (minus the 400+ days taken off the end off for time already spent in custody), it's feasible he may never leave prison.

Also understand that Norway's prisons are far different from America's. They have the chance to play sports, hold jobs, live in relative comfort, and the best-behaved can live more or less on their own and cook their own food with real knives and utensils.

Why? Look at the recidivism rate in Norway - it's minimal. Unlike in America, where prisons are hellholes built for profit and to satisfy the bloodlust Americans have, Norwegians actually give a shit about rehabilitation. As such, going to prison there is like rich people going to rehab because they knocked up the nanny here. And guess what? It fucking works. Unlike America, where damn near everyone re-offends, people in Norway who have been in prison go on to live normal, productive lives.

Over here, Timothy McVeigh was our Anders Breivik. McVeigh was put to death and is called a martyr by many. Breivik was given the same sentence as anyone else who committed that level of crime in Norway, pouted for execution and didn't get it, and last I heard he spends his days bitching that he doesn't have a PS4 in his cell.
