Pepsi Surrending In The Cola Wars?

Interesting story here about how the Big Sugar industry conspired with Coke and Pepsi to drive Royal Crown Cola (RC to southerners) out of business

The Tragic History of RC Cola

Long story short: RC cola's "Diet Rite" was kicking coke and pepsi's ass in the early/mid 1960s, it was the first "diet" cola. Big Sugar, in the pre-Internet era, posted scary faux research about cyclamates and got it banned.

This gave coke and pepsi breathing room to develop Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi.

I have lived in the South basically since the 1960s, I speak fluent Southern, but the one phrase I couldn't figure out was "Yawn RC?" (translation: "Would you care for an RC cola, my good man?")

I use to be a Coke drinker but latest formula sucks ass. Pepsi tastes better now. Only time I drink a cola is with fish 'n chips. Canada Dry Ginger ale for me.

WA;MART is known for resurrecting extinct soda brands (think GRAPETTE and OREANGETTE) and now a cola that tastes better than the top commercial sellers. I wont drink anything else. Could be RC.

They are putting the "ette" on the end to entice all of the southern homos to drinking more colas. You seem to be a grapette if I were to hazard a guess my friend.

I've had some of the foreign Pepsis and Cokes. Most aren't too bad even when they sound awful.

The Tragic History of RC Cola

Very interesting. I miss my RC as I sit here drinking a Coke!;)

Southern side of my family always called colas (especially Coke) 'dope'. "Yawn dope?"

I no longer drink colas unless suitably contaminated by cheap aguardiente rum.

The squirt from a plastic lemon or lime is optional but nice. Real ones work too.

I bought my first - and last coke in about 1953. Drank mebbe half of it. Never tried Pepsi.

I was brought up in the North West Highlands on the principle that God created water, and the saints (better known as the Scots) created whisky. That's all civilized mankind needs to know.

Test my thesis: one glass of chilled, not iced water, and another containing your favourite malt. Alternate slowly between the two - it's the nearest any of you heathens will get to heaven.;)

RC was good and I do miss it. Growing up it was my favorite and my mom always drank Diet Rite. But then I also liked Upper 10, Bubble Up and Fresca so maybe my tastes shouldn't be considered.

Bubble Up was also good in the midwest.
I remember the Nehi brand when my parents took us to the very first free drive in movies in a farmer's field a few times in summers. The owners made their money off the sodas and snacks.

A few large speakers were on posts and a large white sheet was the movie screen.

No white flag smiley here?

Can't say I'm heartbroken. I've hated Pepsi my whole life. I tried to drink one about a year ago when there was nothing else available and it made me kind of sick. There's so much goddamn sugar in that shit! I drink a lot of Coke (It's the real thing!) and that's pretty sweet but goddamn, Pepsi is absurd! Like, what? Coke isn't sweet enough?! Really? You need even more sugar?! Holy Christ on a bicycle!
