How many people use "their" pic as their avatar?

Hey RJ, I'd not guess your avatar was a motor vehicle of any kind from the close up, thank's for the clarification, lol.

No, I'm not a '46 Ford truck...I'm older than that. The one in the picture has been sitting in my orchard for 40+ years. I'm more active than that.

I know why you were confused. I just noticed that I mislabeled that photo as a '46 Ford 3/4 ton, but it is a '46 Chevy 1-1/2 ton. I fooled myself with the artsy cropping.

My forte is late 60's and 70's muscle cars so I'd not of noticed either way, so your secret is safe with us Lit'ers.

Wow at least two posters I've fallen in love with on this blast from the past thread :(

Mine is a Magritte painting. I don't think I'd ever use an actual picture of myself, of face or body on here. The only place I use my real picture for my profile picture is on Facebook.

If you want to get metaphorical...

No, not even then. It's Gustave Dore's engraving of Don Quixote in his Library. But I love it.

Wonder what proportion of the avatars are stolen copyrighted images that serious writers shouldn't even be contemplating swiping and using and that the Web site should be wiping out?

Mine are recent book covers of mine.

That avatar is still me, dated since it was taken some years ago and even then my white beard was coloured with stage make-up, but that's me.

<---

My avatar is out of copyright. It's a Faravahar and may date from as early as 1700 BC . It's a symbol used by Zoroastrians, I'm not of that faith but believe their ethical opinions have never been bettered. So I like it.

AFAIK, people can use images as per "fair image usage policies". The policies can be anything that the owner dictates.

Most artists usually agree that the general public can use their works, as long as they're being acknowledged and it's not being used to make profit without their knowledge or consent. Internet is huge and they can't control every thing that appears.

Images that have copyright or are available for sale have holograms that prevent people from effectively using them. Those pictures are the ones that cause trouble if you don't have permission for it.

That is one of my guitars.

Cool. :rose:

Do you think my avatar is me?

No. I think it's someone like G K Chesterton, or H G Wells.
I've seen it before but cannot remember where.!

As to my AV; forget it. I always thought that the idea of an AV on a site such
as this precluded the use of ones own name and details.
I have heard of one member who had everything taken down because of a serious legal problem;
(a pity; the author was talented and amusing).

I do.

Wrong. Any time you use copyrighted material without the explicit written permission of the copyright holder, you are violating copyright. The copyright holder doesn't have to go around enforcing his/her copyright. It's up to you to obtain explicit permission to use it. Your take on that here is much, much too loose. Serious writers should be happy that the regulations are that tight--and what's good for their proprietary rights should be good for every other artist/writer.

My avatars are usually sent to me by one or two other Litsters - anything with barefeet.

I chose this one though because I like the chain around her ankle. :D
