I don't buy them new. The depreciation, like most expensive cars, is massive in the first year. But Volvos, particularly the large estates, retain value for decades.

My cars are always used. The retained value is not a big consideration for me because I drive them hard and put them away wet.

In 1996, Volvo introduced a new high performance Volvo 850 as a replacement for the hugely successful limited edition T-5R. Volvo decided there should be no direct successor to the T-5R, but due to its huge hand in improving Volvo's image and the big sales success Volvo decided to develop a new high performance model. The new car should be based on the T-5R but with some improvements. The new car was called the Volvo 850 R which again came as either a saloon or Sport Wagon. In 5-door form, the turbocharged station wagon can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 6.5/7.4 (manual/auto) seconds and reach up to 158 mph (254 km/h).

Some UK Police forces used 850R estates. They worried BMW drivers - a standard looking Volvo Estate that could reach 158 mph. The Police versions were rumoured to be enhanced to go much faster than that.

The insurance on my Volvo Estates is low, partly because of my advanced age, but also because Volvo drivers have a good safety record (as do the Volvos!). The insurers might demand a large increase if I bought an ex-Police 850R.

I was there in late July a few years ago, and that was a lovely time to be there. A light sweater was all that was needed, though we were told it was particularly nice weather that weekend. We were only there for a couple of days, so didn't do anything outside of Reykjavik. Had a good time, and I'd like to go again.

I missed the opportunity to go when I was living in Scotland, Iceland seems too far away now.

A good friend had a 2008 volvo xc70 that I was going to buy. He ended up getting a better deal on the new ride trading it in. The honda has never let me down and drives just fine. I am happy to stick with what I have.

Viking dentists?

My dentist was born Finnish, as is her (retired) dentist husband. They trained in Sweden and bought a dental practice in the UK. They are now British Citizens (Og sponsored the husband) but still celebrate Finnish festivals with her elderly Mom's home cooking.

Her mother still owns a small island in Finland which is her (and their) summer holiday home. That island is really small - about 30 metres square with a wooden cabin and a short jetty for landing. Mother uses a rowing dinghy with a low-power outboard motor. They hire a small cabin cruiser when they visit because they can carry more shopping in that. But they usually live off fish caught from the jetty.

When I was young, years before Lit-legal age, my older brother had a Swedish girlfriend. She was my first introduction to a blonde Swede. Later, when of Lit age, I met others, but that's another story.

Apart from being spectacular, at over six feet tall in her bare feet, she was seriously brainy. At the time she was working for her PhD in an obscure field of organic Chemistry. She was fluent in Swedish, German, French and English. I was impressed because unlike some of his earlier (and later) girlfriends she would actually talk reasonably to the much younger brother.

I was sad when they broke up. She married a Swedish Professor but she and my brother remained in contact as family friends for decades.

Good point. Years ago when in Scandinavia I was struck by the physical beauty of the average woman there.

I remember bathing in a mountain stream with a beautiful Norwegian blonde of similar stature after kayaking one evening in Norway. Not only was she a good boater, she could cook.

From what I hear and read some Scandinavians are in the process of messing up a good thing. That's what I think. It's a shame, too. I spent time in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway years ago. They had it good. Problem was, they didn't know to leave well enough alone, and decided to import a lot of people who didn't and don't agree with their way of life. Not a good move.
