Trump's mistake was walking back his original abortion comment

I think everyone who's honest would agree Trump probably doesn't really give two rips about abortion one way or the other.

The idea that his response to Mathews abortion question was "controversial" is clearly an opinion. When the media wants to destroy someone they can take any comment and say its "controversial" over and over and there's not much you can do. I think most Americans whatever side they are on on the issue probably thought that the pro-life view was that the person having the abortion would get some kind of legal penalty. Who knew that was "controversial"?

Trump's mistake was not doubling down and standing to his position. Trump's ability to withstand withering media criticism up till now was due to him doubling down instead of showing weakness when criticized by the media. Now, that can't be said.

His original view wasn't the problem its his response to the criticism that will probably be his undoing. He's no longer the never back down tough guy taking on the media, both parties, and the world. He's shown he's weak for the first time.

I can't fathom why you'd think that. His original comment ticked off both sides. The pro-abortionists clearly don't want a woman prosecuted for having one and the anti-abortionists have been avoiding addressing that like the plague because they know what a can of worms it is to include the woman as responsible for what they want to be an illegal act. Of course the position is controversial. And it had that result; the first time the two sides have come together to oppose a position taken on it. That it is controversial position clearly isn't just an opinion of a few or even some.

I disagree. It's not the first time. Or the second. When he gets pinned down, he weasels. Examples- Jeb Bush's Wife, Carly Farina, Megan Kelly, Scott Walker's record, Heidi Cruz, etc. Okay, more often he makes a personal attack on somebody, or brags about his popularity as proof that he's right.

He should have apologized, OR said "I stand by my words. Next subject." That's what people with self confidence do, they take responsibility for their words. They don't need to interject the terms "believe me" or "trust me".

I can still respect Bernie Sanders when he's wrong, but sincere and consistent.
