I'm learning German.

Language acquisition is simple. Do it like children do.

Generally speaking, the 50 most common words are enough half the time; 3000 words are enough almost all the time. Language courses waste years teaching vocabulary we never use. Unless you plan to be a lawyer or chalky perfesser your word needs are simple.

I come from language savants. My great grandfathers brother spent one summer in the Middle East and came home fluent in Hebrew, Arabic, Farsi, and other languages of that region. Simply learn the most common words and expressions. And the numbers are always modest.

It was the whole masc./fem./neutral for each noun that was the hardest for me. Sometimes with no indication from its ending letters like Spanish gives.

My parents wanted us to learn languages from an early age but I always struggled with and hated learning foreign languages, physics and so on. It took me twice the effort that my sister put into these. They all came so easy for her.

The more abstract disciplines math, literature and later philos. were easier and more enjoyable for me.

Perhaps it has to do with something in the line of L versus R brain dominance, birth order or so on. Who knows why people are drawn to or better at different things, despite having the same background snd experiences.

That's because you are mentally challenged. (AKA retarded) Stick to raping family members and shitting on the front yard of your hut.

I see that you keep following me around.
Don't delude yourself. I haven't read Any of your posts lately (you're on iggy). On the other hand, I see that certain (1 or 2) individuals quoted you or giggled at your "jokes".
So what you're doing is you're catering to the like-minded audience - who mean nothing to me.

My theory for language acquisition should work well in practice. Learn 50 common words, and increase to 3000. Most of our vocabulary we never use. I used what 28 words here?

Quatsch! Willste mir versteh'n oder nich'?

Vocabulary is only half the battle; working out how to use effectively is the difficult bit, as are the nuances. Word seldom maps directly onto word.

Bull shit. HUH? and WASNT ME! and KISS MY ASS are maybe used in 90% of exchanges.

60% of English and French words are the same. It is the accent and pronunciation that are different.

e.g. words ending in "ion"

I understand that all you really need is the core 50, as you say Noir, followed with a further 500-600 and that will cover you for over 90% of all conversations and everyday life.

The words might be similar, but they're worlds apart in terms of syntax and so on.
German and Scandinavian - more closer to English syntax-wise etc.

Or so I was told.

German is my first language, but after years of speaking English I can now only converse verbally. My reading and writing skills in the language are all but gone :(

I recommend the website of Das Bild - it has the vocab level of an 8 year old or so, but the headlines use quite a bit of wordplay and most of the articles are short and simple enough to puzzle out when learning or trying to improve.

Seriously, I've half taught my husband German from a couple of Tintin (Struppi und Tim) books and that tabloid. :)

Honestly, I don't need to read and write German any more.
When I go back to Austria, verbal German is all I need to be able to interact with my family and get about. I still speak German with my Mum when we talk on the phone twice a week and that keeps my verbal skill.

The 100 most commonly used words in English are all found in Old English and thus are all German in origin. French - particularly Norman French has only added vocabulary. English is a Germanic language in all its essentials.

Some West African languages only have 700 words or less.

The small nation of Papua New Guinea has more than 20% of all the worlds languages.

My brother's wife was teaching me German. I was reading and writing the basics fairly well. We retired to Florida and they went to Arizona. My German disappeared.

So far I only need to know English and Redneck where we live. I am slowly understanding Louisianian and Alabamian! Not too good at Mississippian y'all.
